Milk thistle is a weed-like plant that grows wild in Europe, North America, and Australia. In the 17th Century Nicholas Culpepper recorded that milk thistle opened “obstructions” of the liver and spleen. By the 19th Century, German physicians were using milk thistle tinctures for many liver conditions. For thousands of years milk thistle tinctures, milk thistle seeds and milk thistle seed extracts have been used to treat liver problems and gall bladder problems.
Milk thistle contains a bioflavonoid called silymarin which itself contains several compounds. Silymarin is a potent antioxidant and possesses powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Research has confirmed that a compound called silybin is the most active component within silymarin, but unfortunately, silybin has been poorly absorbed by the body until now.
Scientists have found that adding phosphatidyl choline to silybin overcomes this lack of availability to the body. Choline contributes to lipid metabolism and maintenance of normal liver function.
HealthAid Milk Thistle tablets are specially formulated using several of the most potent herbs such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion, Turmeric and Artichoke together with Lipotropic factors.
Directions: As a food supplement, adults and children over 16 years of age, two tablets daily, or as directed by your healthcare professional. Milk Thistle Complex is Free From Yeast, Gluten, Wheat, Soya, Starch, Dairy, Artificial Colours, Preservatives and Flavourings.
Contraindications
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of young children. Please seek professional advice before taking this supplement if you are pregnant or likely to become pregnant, and/or if you are on prescribed medication. Food supplements are not to be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the daily dose. It should also be noted that taking milk thistle should be avoided by those who have allergies in the same plant family, such as chrysanthemum, daisy, marigold, and ragweed. Milk thistle supplementation should be used with caution, as any supplement should. If you have a liver problem, consult your doctor before adding any new herbal remedy to your prescribed medication. People with diabetes should use milk thistle supplements with caution, as these may lower blood sugar levels. There is also concern that milk thistle might affect oestrogen levels, so if you have breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibroids, consider avoiding milk thistle.
Side effects of milk thistle consumption can include:

You should be careful not to take more than 1200mg per day, as this can cause toxic effects.
