Uva-ursi (Bearberry) is a urinary antiseptic. Its action is of benefit in urinary tract infections caused by bacteria or fungi. It contains a glycoside known as arbutin. In the urine, arbutin is hydrolysed, splitting into glucose and hydroquinone. It is hydroquinone which possesses a direct antiseptic action in the kidneys, ureter and, particularly, the bladder. This conversion is encouraged if the urine is alkaline.
The high tannin effect of Uva -ursi has a significant strengthening and toning properties on the membranes of the urinary tract and may be of benefit in bedwetting and incontinence.
Directions: (Shake well) mix 15-30 drops in water; take 1-3 times daily. Discontinue use if unusual symptoms occur. Consult your health provider about the use of herbs during pregnancy, with infants, or with prescription drugs. Keep out of the reach of children.
