Approximately 6 litres of blood is incessantly pumped through an adult's veins. The red blood cells perform a vital function. They transport oxygen to even the most remote locations in the body. To accomplish this, they depend on one particular substance: iron, a vital component of human blood. Iron loss occurs every day through the intestines, the kidneys, the skin and in women during menstruation, and the requirement for iron is increased during pregnancy and lactation.
