There are very few people who don’t appreciate a scented candle. In fact, candles are one of the most popular beauty gifts, alongside fragrance and make-up palettes. According to NPD, the home scents market, which includes candles and diffusers, is worth a whopping $49.9 million in the US. It’s no surprise that there are so many varieties available, from scent combination to one or three wick candles.
While there’s no denying we love them, most of us don’t get the most out of our candles and wax can be wasted. “When you light a candle for the first time you need to let the top layer of wax melt,” says Julia, co-founder of Tutti London. “Making sure that the melt pool reaches the edges will ensure the candle burns evenly.” This helps prevent the area around the wick from burning more quickly.
Avoid burning your candle for more than four hours at a time. Julia also recommends trimming the wick after each burn. “Make sure the wick isn’t longer than 5mm before you start burning it,” she says. Any longer and the wick can spit debris into the wax.
It goes without saying that keeping your candle out of the way of kids and pets will go a long way too. In the meantime, here are the best candles to stock up on…
Best scented candle for the kitchen
While freshly tumble-dried washing or a pot of coffee can leave an inviting scent in your kitchen, green vegetables or garlic a few hours after cooking can be anything but. Enter Tutti London’s clever combination of Wild Mint and Rosemary, £48. Not only is the pairing incredibly refreshing, the hand poured candle offers seriously good payoff, and 60 hours burn time.
Best scented candle for Sunday evenings
Lavender and chamomile are renowned individually for their soothing powers and together they set the tone for a relaxing Sunday evening. This Works Deep Sleep Heavenly Candle, £25, combines the two to create the de-stressor, whether you’re having a bath or just easing your way into the week ahead.
Best scented candle for travelling
If you travel a lot you’ll appreciate the power that a scented candle can have when it comes to reducing jet lag or making you feel at home in a hotel. Neom’s Happiness Travel Scented Candle, £16, not only smells divine, it is very good value for money as it still offers 20 hours burn time. Where brands offer travel candles, it’s always best to buy them first before you commit to a scent.
