Face to Face with Sarah Vine

Sarah Vine is the beauty editor, columnist and feature writer for The Times and has recently launched her own health and beauty website, www.getthegloss.com.

 

What are your views on the ever-changing media landscape?

It’s about being flexible and open to new technologies and the possibilities they provide. From a professional point of view, the internet allows writers to reach a much wider and culturally broad audience; it also allows for unprecedented contact with the reader.

Some find this daunting; I find it hugely stimulating. Culturally, I think the internet gives women a greater chance of shaping the world around them, of having real influence via social networking sites. Today’s generation of mothers and daughters can finally join the national conversation, for so long dictated by the male establishment.

Your weekly beauty columns are laced with humour, what is your take on beauty?

That it’s natural to want to look your best, but that you should never become a slave to the mirror. It was Helena Rubinstein who said “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones.” I think she must have been a bit nuts.

Beauty editors are literally bombarded with products, so what does it take for a product to appear in your column?

It has to work. I try everything I write about, and if it doesn’t work it doesn’t get in. Or I’m rude about it. Read More…

Q: I have a stressful job and sleep badly, waking between 2am and 4am feeling incredibly depressed. I feel better when I finally get up.

A: This type of insomnia is a common result of daytime anxiety, according to the late Dr David Servan-Schreiber, psychiatrist and author of Healing Without Freud or Prozac (Rodale, £8.99*).

There’s a vulnerable moment at the end of the first long period of deep sleep (about four hours into the sleep cycle) when we cross over into the lighter REM sleep (dreaming time). ‘Underlying anxiety of any kind manifests itself during that fragile transition,’ he said.

Sleep disturbance and anxiety leading to depression are interconnected, according to pharmacist Shabir Daya: ‘A relentless train of negative thoughts can begin with the tiniest kernel of reality then escalate out of proportion.’ Stress of any kind upsets the delicate balance of our hormones; it starts with the adrenal glands overproducing cortisol, which prevents mood-lifting serotonin getting to the brain. Lanolips – The next chapter

A movie scene from my youth that fixed in my mind was from the very first Superman epic. Clark Kent hurt his hand, and right in front of a stunned Lois Lane the wound magically healed itself, and his ‘real’ identify was exposed. What struck me about this was that skin healing itself looked so magical… but that’s really what skin actually does (granted not quite so fast).

My view is that humans are pretty incredible, complicated, powerful & perfect, just as we are.

I don’t believe we need to add and create lots of crazy new and unproven chemicals to our skin to improve it. Our skin is magical, it really DOES heal itself. The problem is not the healing process, it is giving our skin the right environment to heal and repair on its own, by itself, to make it as quick and scar less as possible.
