Most of us don’t breathe the right way.  In fact, we use at most 20% of our lung capacity.  But research from Harvard credits breath work to lift depression, relieve stress and anecdotal evidence suggests you can lose weight, perhaps connecting with our breath is more powerful than we had first thought?

Love Your Life

You can’t freeze-frame life. It’s not a photo that stays still. It changes all the time, sometimes slowly, sometimes with chaotic speed. What you can do, however, is to choose your attitude to it on a daily basis and adopt strategies to help you cope with the roller coaster, especially when it’s going down. And how does that fit in with anti-ageing? Quite simply, a calm mind and taking joy in life make you look beautiful and live well. As the French proverb says, ‘there is no pillow so soft as a clear conscience’.

Here are some of our favourite strategies, many of which are now used in healthcare.

Be loving to yourself. Sometimes loving and valuing yourself is very hard. That’s when we’re likely to cause ourselves grief, rely on others for our self-esteem, and make decisions – big and small – based on other people rather than what we really want for ourselves. You could start by just saying to yourself that you are a good person, not perfect – no one is (and please do give yourself permission to get things wrong, make a muddle, be imperfect in everything), but you try your best. If there’s one thing NOT to do in January/February, it’s detox!

After the extra mince pies, pud and stocking chocolates, your system won’t thank you for it. Instead, I simply make an effort to go back to my normal way of eating – nurturing my system with healing hot foods like soups, stews and broths, filled with seasonal vegetables and grains. Once your body is strengthened in this way, it does the job of detoxing itself very efficiently indeed, so there really is no need to go on a hunger strike. Some friends swear by going raw, or sticking to just juice in January, but I think it really puts a strain on the spleen – both Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine believe that healing, warm foods are essential to staying healthy during the coldest months, and if you really want to go on a fast, wait until spring, when the warmer weather will aptly support your cleansing system.
