June Newsletter 2014

shutterstock_112762954

Welcome to the June newsletter where we take a look at some new and exciting product launches, we throw the focus on compromised skin conditions and I write about all the latest news and feedback, which is pretty sensational. Being passionate about ‘therapeutic bathing’, I invite you to dip your toes into a detox bath, the very latest buzz in New York and without further preamble, I am going to begin this newsletter with a fabulous treat and then head straight into the new products; let’s go:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Being one of our best-selling supplements, I really don’t think I need to write reams about HA, save it to say that Shabir and I still believe that it is the single most important supplement to take for anti-ageing. If you are new to VH, you may want to read Shabir’s article, Hyaluronic Acid – The Anti-Ageing Nutrient, but for the rest of you, let’s cut to the chase and let me tell you about the treat:

I am going to begin by saying that this is a very limited treat; I don’t know whether it will last one day, one week or one month, but I doubt the latter! If you buy Hyaluronic Acid, then we will automatically throw a travel size pot, containing 15 capsules, into your order. This is worth £17.50, I suggest you act fast and as most of you know, I have been taking HA for nearly ten years because my face is NOT going to slide south – ever. HA rules! ** Sorry this promotion has now ended. **

Ameliorate for Keratosis Pilaris (Chicken Skin)

Keratosis Pilaris, often abbreviated to ‘KP’, is a very common benign dry skin condition that affects approximately 40% of the population. It has a number of forms, the most common being the appearance of rough, red bumps around hair follicles, mostly on the back of the arms. This appearance gives rise to the name given to KP of ‘chicken skin’. It can also occur on other areas of the body such as the thighs, buttocks and cheeks and although it is not a serious condition, many people find KP unsightly and distressing and it varies in severity.

KP occurs when excess Keratin (a natural protein) is produced and together with dead skin cells, builds up inside hair follicles. This process, called hyperkeratinisation, causes the formation of hard keratin plugs, causing bumps, rather like the appearance of ‘goose bumps’. The hair can become trapped in the follicle and coil in on itself, which exacerbates inflammation and redness; in some cases the follicles may become infected.

Ameliorate (a-mel-io-rate: ‘to improve or make better’) Body Lotion is a brand new, technologically advanced skincare product specifically developed to be an effective therapy for KP and other dry skin conditions. It contains optimal levels of Lactic Acid, a naturally occurring Alpha-Hydroxy Acid that provides intense hydration and encourages the skin’s natural exfoliation process to help remove the build-up of dead skin and replenish moisture, leaving your skin soft and smooth.

Annette Luck, the creator of Ameliorate, has been plagued with KP for the majority of her life and her goal has been to develop an effective, luxurious product that would help with this condition. Ameliorate was born out of her frustration, having consulted many dermatologists that failed to find a solution for her and having spent a small fortune on products that claimed to work for KP, she discovered that nothing did, so she continued to cover her arms up.

You can read more about Annette’s journey on ‘Gill meets Annette Luck’, but out of desperation Annette approached a manufacturer of skincare products with a global reputation for quality and technical innovation working closely with their development team to ensure that not only was Ameliorate an effective KP treatment, but that it also met their stringent quality, safety and ethical standards. Ameliorate was also the subject of an independent self-evaluation efficacy trial conducted over four week period with 47 people who suffer from KP; it was applied twice a day to the affected area, with the following results:

34% saw an improvement in the appearance of KP in one week
70% saw an improvement in the appearance of KP in two weeks
80% saw an improvement in the appearance of KP in three weeks
86% saw an improvement in the appearance of KP in four weeks

89% agreed their skin was smoother
93% agreed their skin was softer
91% saw an improvement in the general condition of their skin
97% agreed their skin felt moisturized after use
81% agreed their skin looked healthier

Another aspect of the trial showed that Ameliorate gave 57% greater moisturization after eight hours than a standard body lotion; I’ll vouch for that one, I’ve been using it for several weeks and I highly recommend it if you have any dry skin condition, although please don’t use it on your face. Nothing more to say other than bravo Annette, au revoir chicken skin and Shabir recommends that you really should take Super Bio-Curcumin if you have KP, which you can read all about on his KP article – the inside/out approach that works.

Double Facial Cleansing

Once again we take our lead from the East as ‘double cleansing’, originating in Japan, is now incorporated into most spa protocols and is recognized as one of the most important beauty tricks. Keeping skin clean is paramount and if done properly it will never over-strip the skin, but will leave it glowing and primed for hydration and moisturizing.

I have been double cleansing for absolutely ages, so in this section I am going to write about my optimum choices for double cleansing, releasing two new products, which are completely fabulous and perfect for double cleansing. We are going to begin with a choice of cleansers for the first stage and I’ll follow through a new product launch for the second stage, which I think you will fall in love with – I have!

Stage One

Cream Cleanser by iS Clinical: This product falls under the clinical range and I jumped for joy when we launched it about a year ago because it is powerful, yet gentle enough for my super-sensitive, allergy-prone, fussy skin! The Cream Cleanser combines bio-nutrients, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients that work to thoroughly cleanse the surface and pores of the skin, whilst soothing dry, irritated areas. It leaves the skin refreshed, hydrated and clean, it dissolves make-up and is effectively soothing for even the most compromised skin conditions.

Just apply a small amount of Cream Cleanser to the palm, rub hands together and massage over the face and neck; incorporating wipe-off technology, you can either pat with a dry tissue or rinse with warm water; I choose the latter and a little goes a long way, so the tube will last a few months.
Cream Cleanser by iS Clinical £43 for 180 ml

New: Lustra Illuminating Cleansing Essence by In Fiore: Cleansing oils are renowned for their role in double cleansing, but the blend has to be perfectly balanced for it to work properly. Julie Elliott, founder of In Fiore, has formulated a cleansing essence that ticks all the boxes for an outstanding cleansing oil. After two years of supplying the ‘beauty elite’ with this product, it now launches as a retail product.

Lustra Illuminating Cleansing Essence is an organically blended glossy cleanser that takes all the moisturizing benefits of oil and puts them into an emollient base that helps to instantly melt away ever the most stubborn make-up, leaving your pores cleaned out with fresh flower extracts.

Loaded with golden jojoba, organic cold-pressed avocado and castor seeds oils, it is highly effective in drawing embedded dirt from deep within. It is perfectly suitable for oily skins too as the base also has grape seed oil, which acts as an anti-inflammatory salve for helping to treat compromised skin conditions.

The best way to use this jasmine-scented cleansing oil is to use your palms and fingers to massage the oil into your skin with rolling motions to help stimulate lymphatic drainage on puffy complexions and drain away toxins. Once again, a little goes a long way.
Lustra Illuminating Cleansing Essence by In Fiore £90 for 125 ml

Stage Two

New: Warming Honey Cleanser by Innovative Skincare: I suppose I could give you a choice of products to use for the second stage of the double cleansing regimen, but I won’t because I’m head over heels in love with the Warming Honey Cleanser by Innovative Skincare and I have been for a very long time as this product plays an important role in their professional spa portfolio.

The background is that there are some products in both the clinical range, iS Clinical, and the consumer-facing range, Innovative Skincare, that are only used in professional treatments and up until now, I wasn’t allowed to sell them to you. So I begged and begged Bryan and Alec (co-founders of iS Clinical) to let me have some of them because unless you break into my bathroom (please don’t!), you would have been deprived of some pretty outstanding products. So with a big thank you to my LA boyfriends, who probably couldn’t bear to listen to my bleating any more, I am launching two products on this newsletter from the professional range and Warming Honey Cleanser comes first.

For centuries honey has been used to help preserve the health of skin and for the treatment of infected wounds. Records show that he healing properties of honey date back to the Ancient Egyptians and the Ming Dynasty in China, where honey was used to preserve the beauty of skin. Honey also has a strong antioxidant element, is a source of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids, whilst helping to reduce inflammation and helping to promote cell regeneration.

A rich, luxurious combination of natural honey, papaya enzymes and green tea extracts, this cleanser warms upon application and provides a pretty sensational cleansing experience. It exfoliates and cleanses the skin and pores, while protecting the skin’s natural ceramide barrier.

To use, just squeeze a small amount of this soothing cleanser into the palm of your hand, add a tiny drop of water (this is important otherwise it is too sticky) and apply to the face. Massage gently for between three to five minutes and you will notice that as you massage, the warming sensation will increase, which kind of makes me very happy. Rinse with warm water to remove and lightly pat your skin dry before using the next stage of your skincare regimen.

The Warming Honey Cleanser made its debut at ‘the chosen’ pre-Oscars Effervescent Red Carpet Facial at the Four Seasons, Beverly Hills, so it’s a little bit famous, but over and above all of that, it really is an amazing product, which still excites me every time I use it. Finally, it can of course be used as a stand-alone cleanser if you wish.
Warming Honey Cleanser by Innovative Skincare £34 for 120 ml

New: CoolMint Revitalizing Masque by Innovative Skincare

When this product landed on my desk I started screaming; Shabir thought there was something seriously the matter with me (there probably is), but I was screeching with excitement because I wasn’t given any warning that one of my most favourite face masks was being morphed from the professional range into a consumer product.

If you have been reading this newsletter for a long time, you may recall me writing about the iS Clinical Fire & Ice facial, which to this day remains the top-selling spa treatment at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills. With a massive celebrity following and as the name suggests, the key focus of the facial is on hot and cold therapies, so the new CoolMint Masque is perfect to use after treating your skin with Warming Honey Cleanser.

CoolMint Revitalizing Masque is a rich, luxurious cooling treatment designed to reinvigorate, refresh and provide soothing hydration for the skin. This professional strength formula features natural botanical antioxidants Centella asiatica, Green Tea, Aloe Vera and Rosemary extracts, which are perfectly balanced with botanically sourced hyaluronic acid – nature’s most powerful hydrator (keep taking the capsules!).

From helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles to boosting radiance and firming the skin, therapies that use cold temperatures can also help stimulate circulation and this mask is also excellent for sunburn, inflammation and of course hydration. The cold element causes the blood vessels to contract and then dilate, which helps improve the oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin’s surface, making it appear wonderfully radiant.

This is the first face mask to be released from Innovative Skincare and it is completely amazing; for those of you who can remember, it resembles Dippity-Do (the hair gel from the 60’s) in texture and after cleansing, apply a layer of CoolMint evenly over your face, avoiding the eye area. Leave it on for between five and ten minutes and if you want to dramatically increase the wonderful tingling cold feeling, fan your face whilst it is on. A pretty cool launch is what I think; heaven help Shabir – another addiction to add to the list!
CoolMint Revitalizing Masque by Innovative Skincare £38 for 90 grams

New: Holistic Dental Tooth Powder

Once upon a time we launched a product called Dental Miracle in the UK; it was amazing, it was a tooth powder that really did perform miracles in cleaning and whitening teeth and keep gums healthy. It died. The new incarnation was a slightly improved version called Dental Splendour. It has just died too and gone to join thousands of others in ‘product heaven’, never to be seen again. So once more the challenge was on to try and find a comparable product, but preferably an improved version and we found it in America.

It’s called Holistic Dental Tooth Powder and it is a refreshing herbal mint powder that cleans teeth and is ideal for gum problems such as gingivitis, bleeding gums, bad breath and other gum issues. These combined herbs in the tooth powder have a gentle action that helps remove dental plaque and stains without damaging the enamel of the teeth and is both soothing and healing. We always recommend Super Ubiquinol Co-Enzyme Q10 Super Strength to help support the health of gums, so get with the programme, it’s a great one! Each pot will last approximately four months.
Holistic Dental Tooth Powder £17.50 for 29 grams; Super Ubiquinol Co-Enzyme Q10 Super Strength (100 mg) £42 for 60 Softgels

New: Alfresco Anti-Bug Bite Shampoo & Conditioner

Some of you may be familiar with the Alfresco anti-bug bite products, which we launched a couple of years ago. The feedback on the range has been really positive with many loyal fans claiming that they won’t set a foot outdoors without wearing Alfresco. The mission of the brand is to help keep biting insects away – beauties without bites – and two new products have just been launched, the Anti-Bug Bite Shampoo and the Anti-Bug Bite Conditioner.

Suitable for all hair types, this new range is based on the popular fragrance of Alfresco Bug Repellent Moisturiser and Aqua d’Alfresco fine fragrance spray. The shampoo is based on a honey and vitamin complex with the addition of 20 essential oils to gently repel insects; the conditioner is designed to help calm the hair and also has 20 essential oils in its formulation. Into the suitcase they go!
AlfrescoAnti-Bug Bite Shampoo £13.50 for 250 ml; Anti-Bug Bite Conditioner £13.50 for 250 ml

New: Pursoma – Radiant Rejuvenation

I’ve always been fascinated with ‘ritualistic bathing’, it conjures up exotic images of different cultures, religions and traditions and it spans centuries leading right up to contemporary bathing, which is often a reflection of ancient practices.

I am forever searching for outstanding bathing experiences, so when I first discovered Pursoma, I wanted to test all of their products right then, in that moment, but I had to wait for them to arrive from New York, where they are creating a big, big buzz. I’m not at all surprised that they are flying off the shelves in NYC because all six products are fabulous; four different bathing rituals, one body mask and one nasal rinse.

Created by Shannon Vaughn and Eva Gajzer, Pursoma is a reflection of their own healing methods after individually suffering health issues. Each of the products help to achieve real results by detoxifying, rejuvenating and soothing the body, so here come the products:

Resurrection Bath: I’m starting with the Resurrection Bath because it is the first one that I tested, basically because the name sang to me. Made from pure, raw and vegan ingredients, this revitalizing and deeply stimulating bath helps to unburden the body from toxins such as environmental irritants, over-indulgence and technological pollution.

The ingredients include French grey sea salt that aids in helping to stimulate circulation and blood flow, which can open the body’s cells to deep cleansing. Single origin Montmorillonite (French green clay) assists in absorbing toxic build-up; soothing Spirulina (algae) and Laminaria nourish the skin to help restore hydration and vitality.

Directions: As a pre and post-bathing ritual, drink 8-16 ounces of water to stay hydrated. Fill your bath with warm water and add the sea salt and algae and swoosh it around to fully dissolve ingredients. Hop into the bath and then add the clay powder. Soak for 15-20 minutes, immersing your body, keeping the water at a consistent temperature and relax while the minerals go to work. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Immediately wrap yourself in a towel and relax under a warm blanket (or duvet) for 15-30 minutes as your body continues to detoxify through perspiration. Rest.

For the purposes of testing, I used the entire contents of the pack, but you could split it in half; this is not a bath to have every night, but a rather spectacular ‘spa-at-home’ treatment to have either weekly or monthly. It is really important to follow the directions, as above, for optimum results.
Resurrection Bath £20

Digital Detox Bath: This is the bestselling product in America, so please bear with us as we are pretty low on stock for this bathing experience, although we expect our stock levels to be replenished within a week. This is an invitation to put down your mobile phone and shut down your computer as this bath is a powerful agent to aid in environmental detoxification and the reduction in muscle tension from stress. Sea salt helps to stimulate circulation and blood flow, helping to relieve stiff joints, muscle cramps and helps open the body’s cells to deep cleansing. Through ionic exchange, the living clay can help to extract toxins out of the body and prepares the body for a deep body re-boot.

The directions for use are the same as above and a word of warning here, I tested this at around 9 pm, put myself under the duvet and didn’t wake up for eleven hours, which is completely unheard of for me. If the phone hadn’t rung incessantly (I forgot to turn it off!), I think I might still be sleeping, I wouldn’t have written this newsletter and Shabir would be in seventh heaven, celebrating the silence!
Digital Detox Bath £20

Hot Tub Bath: A first-aid bath, how wonderful! This potent recovery bath helps to warm and stimulate the body, aiding in the elimination of toxic build-up for when your body needs it the most. Formulated to help combat runny noses (summer colds, hay fever symptoms etc), chest congestion, body aches and fatigue, warming ginger root assists in stimulating circulation, ridding the body of excess fluids and mucus. Once again, the directions are the same as above.
Hot Tub Bath £20

Ocean Potion Bath: An ideal remedy bath to help get over jet lag, a long night out or to bring relief to a fatigued body, Ocean Potion welcomes your body back and balances you in the process. Using the same directions as its big brothers above, Ocean Potion can be used as a weekly experience if you feel the need, mostly I do!
Ocean Potion Bath £8

Earth Bound Body Mask: This body mask goes deep; pure, living, raw, vegan, single-origin clay helps to thoroughly cleanse the body’s skin as Illite clay is known for its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties. It can be used as a soothing agent for compromised skin conditions and it helps to absorb impurities and excess oil to deeply cleanse and exfoliate pores. An ideal remedy for aggravated, inflamed or upset skin, this body mask penetrates to a deep calming effect.
Earth Bound Body Mask £20

Sea Spray Nasal Rinse: We like this product, we like it a lot! Made from pure, raw French grey sea salt, this nasal rinse can assist in preventative care against upper respiratory tract infections, sinus congestion, colds, environmental pollutants and allergens, including hay fever. Daily rinsing helps clean the nasal passages and can rid the body of bacteria, fungus, chemicals, irritants and allergens that can cause chronic inflammation and aggravation.

When used daily, this nasal rinse can help to increase oxygen flow to the body, which is known to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and improve oxygen circulation to create a more restful sleep. Breathe easier and use in conjunction with a Neti Pot.
Sea Spray Nasal Rinse £10 for 113 grams; Neti Pot £3.50

The Health Benefits of Black Garlic

Garlic has been used as a medicinal herb since medieval times and historic records indicate that garlic has been used as a diuretic, digestive aid and antibiotic as well being ‘prescribed’ for colds, infections and a wide variety of other ailments. Scientists discovered that each clove of garlic has more than 400 beneficial compounds found within the oil, one of which is called allicin. Each bulb of garlic contains an enzyme called allinase, which combines with allinin found in the garlic bulb to form the active compound, allicin, which has health enhancing properties.

There has been a recent rise in popularity of Black Garlic; White Garlic becomes Black Garlic following a month-long fermentation process under strictly controlled heat and humidity. This very specific process results in a soft, jelly-like texture that is free from odour and has a taste similar to figs.

From a nutritional point of view, Black Garlic has a much higher content of allicin, the active ingredient in White Garlic, is rich in amino acids and has almost double the amount of antioxidants when compared to White Garlic.

Black Garlic also contains an additional compound called S-Allycysteine (SAC) in very high concentrations, which is water soluble and thus absorbed easily within the body. SAC has been shown to assist with the absorption of allicin, which makes Black Garlic far more effective than White Garlic. Additionally it is well tolerated by the digestive system, so the chance of gastric distress is minimised.

To discover more about the health benefits of Black Garlic, please do take the time to read Shabir’s article about the importance of Black Garlic.

Hay Fever Relief

Hay Fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, occurs mostly during spring and summer and the symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, all of which can leave you completely drained of energy.

The causes of hay fever are widely known; it is an allergic response to pollen and other airborne allergens such as fungal spores and the reaction is further heightened by pollution. When airborne allergens, such as pollen, enter the body, the immune system produces just the right amount of histamine, which sends signals to the complex structure of blood cells and chemicals that help protect the body. In the case of hay fever, the body produces far too much histamine resulting in the inflammation of tissues leading to a stuffy nose, watery eyes, wheezing and even headaches.

Many people resort to conventional treatment, including anti-histamine tablets, which are not without side effects, but fortunately there are some pretty great products that can help people cope with hay fever. In a far-reaching article, Shabir investigates the very best products available to help support sufferers of hay fever, many of which, such as Aller-DMG, have had really outstanding feedback.

News and Feedback

Once again, the news is dominated by Sheald Recovery Balm and the Sheald Post-Procedure and Repair Kit by iS Clinical. It is approximately six weeks since Sheald Recovery Balm was featured in The Sunday Times and as I’m writing this I believe we are totally up-to-date with our orders and for the first time since the article, we don’t have a wait list.

After we released the Post-Procedure Kit on the newsletter, we got bombarded yet again, which didn’t really surprise me because the efficacy of each of the products in the kit is unquestionable; then we started to receive the feedback and your phone calls and emails touched me deeply. I’m going to share just a few emails we received and quite honestly there is no greater reward than knowing that a product is making such a positive difference to so many of you:

1/ We have used it on my son’s chronic dermatitis and it has almost healed it completely; a total miracle in comparison to all the prescription creams and lotions we have tried over the last six years.

2/ The Post Procedure Kit is fantastic. Four months after my EMC I’ve been looking for a miraculous product to sort my skin and scar out. This is it.

3/ I initially ordered two tubes, one for my 80 year old father who has knocked his shin and one for my husband who has suffered from eczema on the back of his hands and tried everything else to no avail! I have to tell you that it seems to have worked wonders on the eczema which has now totally cleared.

4/ Its been an absolute God-send so far, along with the other iS Clinical products as I had breast surgery back in January.

5/ I ordered the Post Procedure Kit and was blown away. My 18 year old daughter was suffering a blemish breakout on her face. I handed over the Cleanser, Pro-Heal Serum and Sheald and overnight her skin began to heal and now a few days later the blemishes almost gone! We are both overjoyed.

The Wrap: Just a couple of things to say here; firstly the very lovely Kazu (Phylia) has just posted an entry on her blog about iS Clinical, which you can read here; in it she refers to the work iS Clinical do with their Cancer Care programmes at Cedars Sinai together with other ‘giving’ initiatives. I have previously referred to some of these initiatives and the commitment iS Clinical have undertaken to employ the highest ethical standards to advance the science of skin health.

Over the next year there are going to be a series of new launches and initiatives, which will be pretty astounding, trust me! My lips are sealed, but just know that I have been testing some pretty phenomenal lab samples for the past six months and I uphold my ten year belief that iS Clinical is probably the most scientifically advanced cosmeceutical brand in the world.
Sheald Recovery Balm £43; Sheald Post-Procedure and Repair Kit £72

As ever, the response to the May newsletter was pretty fabulous; quite a few new designs from Kitsch, which are flying out the door; the new Strawberry 101 from Lanolips went a touch wild; the world seems to be stocking up on Triple Allergy Defense and Reparative Moisturiser from Innovative Skincare had a glorious moment in the spotlight.

Amongst all this we have been faced with some pretty monumental product issues; Skin Restoring Phytoceramides won’t be back in stock until the beginning of June, the lower strength Super Ubiquinol got delayed for about the fifth time, but thankfully is now available. So what to say, thumping my desk doesn’t get the stock here any faster, a magic wand would be useful, but in the absence of that please accept my apologies if you are either on a wait list or have had to wait a long, long time for a product.

CEW Awards

Big congratulations to Lanolips and Color Wow for each winning a CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) award. Lanolips was awarded the Best New Make-Up Product (Eyes or Lips) for Banana Balm 3-in-1 Lip Conditioner and Color Wow Root Cover Up was named as the Best New Haircare/Styling/Colouring Product. Color Wow has proved a saviour for those of us who colour our hair; it brushes onto roots to disguise grey re-growth, staying put until you shampoo. I do so love launching products that then become award-winning, makes my little heart happy. Niche brands rock!
Banana Balm by Lanolips £8.99; Root Cover Up by Colour Wow £28.50 (in six shades)

Firmante Elevating Leg Tonic

We released Firmante from In Fiore on the May newsletter and the response was so fabulous I decided to extrapolate further and incorporate Julie Elliott’s (the founder of In Fiore) recommendations for leg massage. The regular use of a cellulite-fighting leg energizer with an artful massage is helpful to breaking up dimpled pockets of cellulite and helps skin glow. While there is no cure for cellulite, regular massage with Firmante will improve circulatory stagnation and tone up tired tissues.

The blend includes Cypress oil which helps increase lymphatic flow and helps loosen cellulite, while the rejuvenating effects of neroli oil can help to boost cell activity, giving legs a smoother, healthier appearance. A powerful profile of herbal extracts including Echinacea, calendula, comfrey and dandelion help to further stimulate skin and helps provide immune support for tense muscles. There are four stages to Julie’s leg massage protocol using Firmante as follows:

Feet: Begin at the feet by sandwiching each foot between the palms of your hands for a firm and friction rub for three-five minutes. Follow this by gentle strokes from the toes to the ankles for enhanced circulation.

Legs: Raise the leg and support it at the ankle with your right hand. Push your left hand firmly up from ankle to knee. After six-eight vigorous strokes, repeat with the other hand. Repeat this step twice more on each leg.

Thighs: Using both palms, alternate between a fast friction rub and slow, firm strokes with the heel of the hand, keeping fingers relaxed, but curved. Repeat on the opposing leg.

Backs of Thighs: Apply smooth, continuous strokes up the back of the leg and continue down the centre. At the top of the thigh continue the movement down opposite sides of the leg with one hand on either side until you reach the back of the ankle again. Repeat three times while increasing the pressure on the upwards stroke towards the heart.

In an ideal world if this massage was carried out every day, you would definitely see a difference to the tone of your legs within a week; the thought of appearing in a swimsuit (or a bikini!) should be enough to spur us all on, so once or twice a week would be better than nothing at all. Get rubbing!
Firmante Elevating Leg Tonic by In Fiore £75 for 120 ml

The Perfume Society

I really don’t think that Jo Fairley needs any introduction, but just in case you don’t know, Jo is a former magazine editor and she remains a Contributing Editor to The Mail on Sunday’s YOU magazine. She co-founded Green & Black’s with her husband, Craig Sams and together with Sarah Stacey, Jo is co-author of the bestselling Beauty Bible series and she writes a monthly column for us!

Jo has always had a particular passion for writing about fragrance and is twice winner of a Jasmine Award, the ‘Oscars’ of the perfume-writing world. For several years she shared her passion for fragrance via The Scent Critic, which is taking a back seat now that The Perfume Society has just launched.

I have known about The Perfume Society since its inception (of course!) and have been privileged to be on the inside watching Jo create the very first perfume appreciation society together with Lorna McKay. I have always been rather besotted with the sense of smell and the creation of beautiful scents, testimony to which is my very battered and beloved book, The Fragrant Pharmacy, bought a few decades ago.

Let me tell you a little bit about The Perfume Society; their website (www.perfumesociety.org) is completely fascinating and every time I go onto the site I lose myself in its splendour; the articles about ‘the noses’, the history, the perfume houses and the art of perfumery are pretty amazing and I invite you to indulge yourself in this extraordinary world.

But there is more. You can subscribe to The Perfume Society and for £25 a year you will receive exclusive benefits including a joining gift discovery box of eight beautiful perfume samples. Eight times a year you will receive a copy of their e-magazine, The Scented Letter, a complimentary workshop and invitations to ticketed events with leading ‘noses’ and key figures from the perfume world.

It is of course no secret that Jo and I are very close; you will read on her website how she keeps some very special fragrances in her bedroom and I’ve raided that stash and spent a few hours in her ‘perfume room’ raiding that too! Despite all of this, I have gifted myself membership of The Perfume Society, I don’t want to miss out on anything and there is nothing better than supporting a very close friend. So bravo Jo and I invite each of you to visit the site and to join me in becoming a VIP member. Needless to say, Jo’s editorial feature this month is The Perfume Society. I hope you enjoy reading all about it, as I hop into my bedroom to spray some vintage Rive Gauche all over myself.

More New Products

At this precise moment, it feels like this newsletter will never end, but I do need to tell you about some more product launches, so here we go again:

Spot Stickers by Sarah Chapman

I have to say that I love it when brands release new products on a regular basis and Sarah Chapman has released some pretty amazing new products this year including 3D Moisture Infusion and The Body Lift. So now, something completely different from Sarah, Spot Stickers.

The Spot Stickers are infused with salicylic acid and other ingredients, including vitamin C, which release over time to help calm/reduce redness, decongest and speed up spot recovery. They are really easy to use and are barely visible, so you can quite happily wear a Spot Sticker during the day. There are 16 individually wrapped and sterile stickers, which are presented in signature Skinesis wallet, ready for a quick fix. As soon as you feel a spot appearing just slap one of these one and you can re-apply as often as required, but it is recommended you change the sticker every four hours (unless you are sleeping of course!).

The instructions are really simple and of course please ensure that your skin is clean, dry and free from cream before you make an application. Clever Sarah; clever little Spot Stickers.
Spot Stickers by Sarah Chapman £19 for 16 Spot Stickers

Evolution of Smooth (EOS)

Under pressure from my daughter, we have now listed the wonderful lip balms from EOS. I know she only wants me to write about them so that she can grow her stash, but she keeps telling me that all the trendsetters have several in their bags and all the celebrities use and love them. Apparently they are ‘collectables’ so I am writing about them so she can stop driving me mad and actually they are pretty wonderful and ever so cute.

Each Smooth Sphere Lip Balm is 95% organic, 100% natural, paraben and petrolatum free and is packed with antioxidant-rich vitamin E, soothing shea butter and jojoba oil. They keep your lips moist, soft and sensationally smooth and they precisely glide on lips. The packaging is of course completely adorable and they come in the following flavours: Blueberry Acai, Strawberry Sorbet, Pomegranate Raspberry, Summer Fruit, Sweet Mint, Honeysuckle Honeydew, Medicated Tangerine and Lemon Drop with SPF 15. Right that’s that done and heaven forbid we should not be trendsetters!
EOS Lip Balms £5.99 each

Complexion Cocktail with a Shot of H2Omega

Whether your skin is naturally dry or not, natural moisture and critical water can escape due to extreme hot and cold, arid climates indoors or out, sweating it out in the gym (er, not me – I don’t do gyms!), air travel or a deficiency of omegas. Whatever the cause, none of us want our skin to look old before its time.

This new innovative Complexion Cocktail contains a shot of H2Omega, a proprietary powerhouse blend of hydrators specifically formulated to help refill and repair skin’s natural hydration system. The shot of H2Omega combines Chia Oil, nature’s richest source of Omega 3s, which saturates skin with essential fatty acids together with Electrolyte-rich Coconut Oil, renowned for its natural hydrating power. Shake well before use, apply to clean skin and voila, your cocktail can be used both morning and evening.

Skin Deep Golden Elixir

Another new product launch from This Works and Skin Deep Golden Elixir is a shimmering 24 carat gold, vitamin rich body serum which has been formulated to help hydrate and enhance skin. Gold helps stimulate collagen, Clary Sage regenerates, Rose and Patchouli are included for their antioxidant roles, Aloe Vera and Chamomile soothe and Vitamin A is included to help reduce wrinkles. Just give it a shake and massage all over the body, singing ‘Goldfinger’ perhaps!

The End Bit

We have reached the end of another newsletter so as ever, together with Shabir, I thank each of you for your tremendous support and loyalty. It’s never easy when we are faced with huge wait lists for products and whilst many cosmetic companies use their wait lists as newsworthy items, it just makes me feel pretty stressed and guilty that we have kept you waiting. We get there in the end, so thank you for your patience.

I hope you have a wonderful June … Wimbledon, Strawberries and Holidays – Enjoy.

With love
