June Newsletter 2012

June NewsLetter

Welcome to the June newsletter where I am going to tell you about two new launches from the fabulous Sarah Chapman, so if you love Instant Miracle Mask (who doesn’t!) then you are going to love these. We will also take a look at some other new products, I will bring you all the latest news and feedback and Shabir writes about probiotics, which quite honestly we should all be taking. More on that later, together with this month’s editorial and a special treat, but first I am going to do something I rarely do, I am going to lead this newsletter with Phylia de M for the second month running. Let’s go:

Phylia de M.

Managing expectations is something that I take very seriously, because there is nothing worse than reading about products that offer the ‘impossible dream’ and then they fail to deliver. As many of you will know, we launched Phylia de M in the UK on the last newsletter and I announced that they were the most spectacular hair care products that I have ever used. If you missed it then please click here to read what I wrote, but basically the following paragraph will give you the gist of what this brand is all about:

Phylia de M is specifically targeted for nurturing recovery from a variety of hair and scalp conditions such as excess hair loss, slow growth, thinning hair or limp lifeless hair and for those who have abused their hair via excess tinting, dieting or questionable styling techniques. The philosophy behind the range is that everyone’s hair has the potential to be amazing and ingredients include a blend of organic aloe, tannic acid (a plant-based reparative) and pure, humic-free fulvic acid, which provides vital keratin to cells and ‘reminds’ them to perform at optimum capacity.

To be able to say that these products revive and restore hair growth is no small thing, but they do. To be able to say that they deliver the dream is a dream in itself and I will go even further, Phylia de M are the ‘holy grail’ of hair care products and I can’t ever imagine using anything else.

The feedback from you over the past month has been nothing short of phenomenal, with most of you reporting that you have noticed a difference in your hair from the very first day, which happened to me too. Obviously if you have thinning hair, it will take some time to see results, but you will see a noticeable difference in the condition of your hair if you are using all three products on a regular basis. I know this is a big ask, but as I wrote in May, the investment is really worth it and so are you!

Finally, I just have to say a big thank you to Annabel Rivkin for writing so magnificently about ‘Connect’ in ES magazine last Friday. If you missed it, please click here to read what she wrote. When somebody writes from the heart, it makes a difference and this article is going to make a difference to so many people, so Annabel thank you for being a star and just to say we are virtually out of stock. So please bear with us – I have been screeching (with absolute delight) to the girls in LA and our next consignment should arrive in 48 hours. Fertiliser for the hair, you just have to love that!
Clean £28 for 265 ml; Condition £30 for 265 ml; Connect £45 for 120 ml; Phylia de M: Three Step Kit £103; VH Editorial: Gill meets Kazu & Kidada

New Products

Right, quite a few new products this month, most of which lean more towards beauty than health and just because I know how much you adore Sarah Chapman’s products, we are going to start with two new products from her:

Skinesis Clinic Collection – Sculpting Chin and Jaw Lift

I knew that Sarah was working on a new product a few months ago and she told me that I would completely adore it, so when it finally landed on my desk, I was all over it like a rash and I ran (well drove like a lunatic!) home to test it. When something says ‘stretch, lift, tighten and sculpt’ on the packaging and it’s all about your chin and jaw, then I need to have it in my life and trust me, you will want it in your life too.

Inspired by Sarah’s dramatic skin sculpting, reshaping and firming clinical treatments, this lifting treatment delivers potent skin tightening actives in an elastic mask that stretches up and over the chin, neck and jowls. It claims that your neck and chin will appear more defined, re-modelled and firm and will give the feeling of an instant ‘chin lift’ and it does just that.

The woven sling-mask is infused with skin firming algae and plant collagen, protective antioxidants, hyaluronic filling spheres, rose water and Gigawhite, a Swiss plant extract that brightens and improves vibrancy, tone and luminosity. It’s all a bit weird when you first open the pack and see the mask and it’s even weirder when you discover that you have to hook the mask over your ears, but who cares, as long as it works and it does, rather magnificently in fact.

I would actually suggest and recommend that you lock yourself in your bathroom for this one and you will understand why when you use it. I got slightly confused because I thought the mask was too delicate to stretch, but I was wrong, it is pretty sturdy, so don’t be frightened to yank it over your ears. Sarah calls it a sling and I call it a hammock, but either way you can actually feel the lift and after 15 minutes I was pretty astounded with the results. The temptation is of course to use one every night, but Shabir will absolutely kill me and I’ll get another lecture about curbing my extensive use of our products, not that I listen of course!

So here’s the details. I am writing about this before the official UK launch and I know that many of you will not be able to wait to get your hands on this, but you are going to have to because there is a wait list. We expect to receive the product just before the middle of the month, but the initial release is limited, so if you want to be amongst the first in the world to experience this amazing product, then I recommend ordering now and as ever, in line with company policy, we will not debit any monies from your account until the day your order is processed and sent. Go, go, go . . . . . . !
Sculpting Chin and Jaw Lift by Sarah Chapman £38 for Six Masks (so that’s just over £6.30 per chin lift!)

Instant Miracle Mask Refills

After we launched Instant Miracle Mask on the March newsletter, it became a runaway success, a whole lot of you got seriously addicted (including many beauty editors), the team at Sarah Chapman are doing a rather heroic job of trying to keep up with the demand (although we have gone out of stock on more than one occasion!) and the rest is history as within just three months Instant Miracle Mask has become an iconic cult product that quite a lot of us would not want to live without (yes, another one to add to the rather long list!).

Now, if you have been living under a rock and you missed the launch, then you can click here to read all about it, but for everybody else, it just had to happen and it has – Sarah Chapman are launching Instant Miracle Mask Refills. For those of you who already have Instant Miracle Mask, then you will know that you get four sachets and a beaker to shake the mask. So instead of buying the original set, just keep the beaker and going forward, just buy the masks. You get six masks in each of the refill packs, so that equates to £7 per miracle.

Once again, I am writing about this pre-launch and we expect to receive stock just before the middle of June as per the Sculpting Chin and Jaw Lift above. All very exciting and please do remember that The Facialift should be used with both of these products for seriously optimum results. It just happens to be rather relaxing too, which is always a bonus.
Instant Miracle Mask £38 (the original set); Instant Miracle Mask Refills £42 for 6 Masks; The Facialift £25

Yes! Nurse

I really like this story, I really like the product and I really like a strong mission, so although I wouldn’t normally write reams about a hand care product, this story is compelling and it deserves to be told:

A paediatric nurse in the north of England has inspired the creation of a brand new hand care product for nurses, which promises to solve a problem facing growing numbers of medical staff across the UK. Antonia Steven has spent the last two years developing Yes! Nurse, an intensive moisturising hand formula specifically developed to counteract the strict daily scrubbing and application of hand sanitizers routine faced by nurses and their hospital colleagues.

The idea for the cream started when Antonia was briefly signed off work with sore cracked hands, which made her work on the hospital wards increasingly difficult and also posed an infection control risk. She carried on working until the occupation health team advised that she took a week off to help heal her hands. After trying numerous creams, none worked for her and several of the formulations actually made her skin worse and she wasn’t alone. An increasing number of Antonia’s colleagues were suffering from dermatitis and hands that were so dry that they would crack and bleed.

Whilst NHS guidelines acknowledge the importance of using a suitable product to help protect skin from the drying effects of regular hand decontamination, many hospitals were not providing the kind of moisturising protection that doctors and nurses needed. So the Yes! Nurse mission was born, the product was created and over 30 nurses across the UK have signed up as brand ambassadors.

The formulation uses a range of natural ingredients including Active Manuka honey and plant seed oils high in essential fatty acids. These ingredients compliment the skin’s natural defences and provide a fast absorbing cell-boosting treatment and I’m pretty impressed with the results on my own hands. So the mission continues and whilst it is of course imperative the nursing community have access to this wonderful product, I believe that it should be accessible to all of us too. Happy hands rule and Antonia, many, many congratulations for all the work you are doing in making a difference to so many people, because this hand cream is a complete winner.
Yes! Nurse £5.49 for 50 ml

Altitude Oil by Annee de Mamiel

If you read this newsletter regularly, you will know that I am a huge fan of Annee’s and I only wish that she was in London more regularly because her acupuncture treatments are amongst the best in the world (actually several of us think she is THE best in the world). A few times a year, Annee releases seasonal oils and so it gives me enormous pleasure to introduce you to Annee’s latest release, Altitude Oil.

Having lived across the globe, Annee is a regular air traveller, so it comes as a natural addition to her collection of seasonal facial oils and teas, that she should design a blend specifically for use when travelling. Altitude Oil contains a range of powerful, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and antiseptic ingredients to help support and protect the immune system whilst in the confines of an air cabin, or closer to earth, on busy public transport; to use, just sprinkle a few drops on a tissue, or add a drop under each nostril and inhale deeply.

The key ingredients in this formulation include Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Pine, Fragonia, Lemon myrtle (which appears to be having a moment!), Patchouli and Jojoba. I will leave the final words on this to Annee: ‘So many of us fly regularly, but not only can it cause congestion and a stuffy head, but cabins can be full of bugs. I wanted to create a blend that helped to fight off germs, whilst also giving you a bit of a ‘freshener’ and a moment of calm. You can also add a few drops to a hot bath when you arrive, for added benefit’.
Altitude Oil by de Mamiel £22 for 10 ml

Miss Flicklash

Many of you will read this and think that I’ve lost my mind and maybe I have, but when these landed on my desk they intrigued me and although I wouldn’t normally list or write anything about products such as these under normal circumstances, something ‘pinged’ in my head and I thought we should have a bit of fun. I don’t need to describe Shabir’s face when he saw them, so let’s just move on!

As the name suggests, Miss Flacklish are false eyelashes with an eyeliner flick attached and it was the flick that caught my attention. The eyeliner flick has become a signature beauty look and it works for most people, creating a flattering shape to extenuate the eye. However it is notoriously difficult to be able to master the ‘flick’ without the skills of a professional make-up artist, so enter Miss Flicklash, a new innovative false eyelash design which includes an attached eyeliner flick. Rather clever, I think.

There are three different eyelash styles; long party style lashes, a more subtle short lash and a natural style, which all give a striking finish. If you are not used to wearing lashes, then I would recommend that you go for the natural style because these are the ones that I have been wearing and they impact really well, but the choice is of course yours!

There are full instructions for use and application tips on the product pages and there are two different colour flicks, black and gold. They are of course re-usable and if you look after them well, then they will last quite a long time. As this is a new launch, the introductory price is £9.99 and I’m not too sure how long that price point will be held – hope its six months!
Miss Flicklash £9.99 per set

Bloat-X

Several years ago I wrote a whole feature called ‘Ban the Bloat’ and I wish I could find where I filed it because I could have copy and pasted it in here, but alas it seems to have disappeared into cyber space, so no short-cut for me on this section!

Bloat-X is an advanced digestive, water and fluid balance formula, which has been specifically blended for a lighter, flatter feeling stomach. At birth humans are estimated to be 90% water, which over time decreases to approximately 70% and then goes down to 50% in old age. Water is essential to human health; it helps regulate temperature with perspiration, it moistens our eyes and it is necessary for our cells to absorb nutrients and get rid of waste materials. It also helps our digestion and excretion processes and is important to blood flow.

Bloating, however, may be an indication that the normal process of water in, water out, may be impaired either on a temporary or a more permanent basis. There are many causes for bloating, some involving unnecessary water retention, but many also involving food intolerance that can cause gas in the digestive tract or food allergies that occur due to a lack of digestive enzymes or beneficial bacteria. Other symptoms of bloating may be caused by menstrual cycle discomfort, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and sometimes by intestinal parasites.

Bloating results in a puffy appearance, a feeling of discomfort and a lack of energy, which can sometimes result in feeling sluggish. Bloat-X was formulated to fight bloating back with a proprietary blend of soothing, restorative and cleansing herbs, together with an advanced and balanced blend of digestive enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, proteins, fibres and lactose. If you are just having a moment, then one course of Bloat-X should do the trick, but if you are constantly bloated, then these will help resolve the issue, most especially if you double whammy them with Super Digestive Enzymes, which is Shabir’s recommendation.
Bloat-X £16.33 for 60 Vegan Capsules; Super Digestive Enzymes by Life Extension £22.95 for 100 Capsules

News and Feedback

Spray di Sole – Liquid Bronzing Set: A great big thank you to Sarah Vine for writing the following in The Saturday Times magazine after she had been testing bronzing products that really do what they say on the tin: ‘My absolute favourite, though, is a new product called Spray di Sole Liquid Bronzer Set. Pump a couple of doses onto a kabuki brush (which comes with it) and then work into the skin using small, circular movements. It produces an astonishingly natural, flattering effect, which really does make you look as though you’ve been relaxing all day on a beach in Ibiza. I can see myself becoming addicted to this stuff’. Love it when award-winning journalists are on the same page!
Spray di Sole Liquid Bronzing Set £42 (Set includes Liquid Bronzer, Kabuki brush and a refillable atomiser)

Heal Gel: From a customer: ‘Just wanted to let you know how remarkable this gel is. I have to have a lot of blood tests and always from the back of my hand, so as you can imagine the poor old veins get quite a bashing. To cut a long story short, last time I was particularly bruised over the back of my hand – purple and black, even extending round to my palm. I tried witch hazel and arnica (old standbys, which have helped in the past), but nothing helped so I thought I would try Heal Gel. The next morning my bruising had started to fade and now on day four, it has almost disappeared, so it is worth every penny. Thank you so much for this amazing stuff. ‘

I have received so many Heal Gel stories, but I particularly liked this one, so I thought I would share it with you. On last month’s newsletter I reported that the price of Heal Gel would be going up. I still think it is, but we live another month without a price increase and I’m holding my breath because it is of course out of my control.
Heal Gel £33.50 (for the moment!)

Yoga For Life: We launched Yoga For Life, Jo Fairley’s fabulous new book, on the May newsletter and I am so, so happy with the response and feedback we have received. The book is pretty sensational, even if you are not a yoga freak and it is both inspirational and uplifting. I keep referring you back to the May newsletter, so much so that I’m thinking that I should add the May newsletter to the bottom of this one, but it will take so long to read, you may kill me, so if you missed what I wrote then click here and we have the only signed editions in the world!

Just need to add that Jo fell over about ten days ago and broke her left wrist (after breaking her right wrist just a year ago), so we are keeping her heavily dosed on Bromelain, Superior Joints, Vitamin K and Vitamin D because she has to update The Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible within the next two weeks, but I’ll keep you updated on that and there is some pretty exciting stuff coming back from the testing panel. My lips however are sealed!
Yoga For Life by Josephine Fairley £13.99 (RRP £16.99)

Botanical Therapeutics – Skin Cream: From a customer: ‘Approximately five years ago I started to have very red, itchy, sore skin around both my eyes and on my eyelids, usually starting around this time of year. I saw several local pharmacists and also my GP but nothing they prescribed or told me to do seemed to work. One day I was on the VH site looking for hand cream and noticed that I could get an online consultation, so I sent an e-mail detailing my symptoms and immediately received a reply advising me to try Botanicals Therapeutic Skin Cream. I put an order in immediately and on using it as instructed my eyes became 100% better. I now use it every morning, just a little on both eyelids, and have done for the past two years and have had no trouble with my eyes since.

I would be happy for you to share this e-mail, as personally I think this cream is invaluable and I hope my words will help others’. And this is precisely why I love your feedback – sharing makes a difference.
Skin Cream by Botanical Therapeutics £13.95 for 120 ml

Liquid Chlorophyll and Acne: After launching Liquid Chlorophyll (yes, yes on the May newsletter again!) we have received a lot of emails asking whether Liquid Chlorophyll could help clear the skin from acne. The answer is yes, it will absolutely help and when taken in conjunction with Burdock Root, the efficacy increases because it is all about clearing toxins from the liver and blood stream.
Ultra Concentrated Liquid Chlorophyll £25 for 59 ml (59 servings);

Burdock Root by Swanson £11.50 for 100 Capsules;
VH Editorial:
Go Super Green with Chlorophyll

Olive Leaf Extract: From a customer and I’m including this in case anybody else has a problem: ‘I have been taking this for a week (my blood pressure seems to be going down, fingers crossed), but I am struggling to take the tablets. They seem to just catch in the back of my throat and I would like to know if it is ok to break them in half to take’. The answer to this is yes, you can open them and sprinkle the ingredients into juice. Hope that helps.
Even Moderately High Blood Pressure Can Lead To A Magnitude of Complications; Super Strength Olive Leaf Extract £25

Lanolips 101 – A Treat

Let’s cut to the chase here and make this short, sweet and to the point. You all know that I adore Lanolips and I have written about the brand almost continuously since we launched it in the UK. Whatever happens going forward, and there are some rather exciting things on the agenda, my first love will always be the award-winning cult 101 Ointment. So here is the treat, the first 100 people to buy a tube of Lanolips 101, will get another one absolutely free to give to a friend. Share the magic and there are no catches and no special codes, so it’s first come, first served, only 1 gift per customer and get those fingers moving because the countdown starts right now.
Lanolips 101 Ointment £11

The Most Important Supplement For The Whole Family To Take Every Morning

Probiotics have formed a vital part of Mediterranean diets for thousands of years in the form of pickled foods and fermented milk products and are in part responsible for the relatively low rates of chronic age-related diseases in these regions. The name ‘probiotics’ is derived from two Latin words; pro meaning ‘for’ and biotic meaning ‘life’, in other words ‘for life’.

Shabir takes an in-depth look at probiotics, how they work, when to take them, the role of yoghurt and the importance of probiotics when travelling. I have taken Mega-Probiotic ND for many years as they are an integral part of my supplement regimen. Rather interestingly, there was a rather horrid stomach bug doing the rounds recently and many of my friends fell victim, including Sarah Stacey, which was rather untimely as it was the week before her wedding. Within 48 hours of taking Mega-Probiotic, they had all completely recovered, which made me rather happy because it illustrated the power of cutting-edge supplementation and further endorsed the fact that not all supplements are created equally or have the correct therapeutic dose to make a difference.
VH Editorial: Probiotics; Mega-Probiotic ND by Food Science of Vermont £18.50 for 60 Capsules

Derma-E Skincare

A couple of years ago I wrote a newsletter where I said that I very rarely wrote about Derma-E products, but that this American skincare brand, which we have carried for many, many years, has its own unique fan club and without me even mentioning new product launches, they just fly out the door. I’m actually going to address a couple of things here and the first is that they have just brought out a new skincare range called Evenly Radiant:

There are four products in the range; Evenly Radiant Day Cream SPF 15; Evenly Radiant Night Cream; Evenly Radiant Serum and Evenly Radiant Dark Circle Eye Cream. If you are a Derma-E fan, then do check this range out because they have been formulated to help prevent the visible signs of ageing and are ideal for skin with uneven pigmentation, sun damage and freckles, with the exception of the Dark Circle Eye Cream, which helps diminish the look of dark circles, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles.
Derma-E Evenly Radiant Collection from £22.95

The second thing I am going to write about is Derma-E’s Cracked Skin Relief Cream. This product has been around for years and years and it is still the best product I have ever used on my feet. Now that the sun has finally decided to shine, there are going to be a lot of bare feet on show, so if your feet need some TLC, this is the product that will provide it. It has been formulated with natural herbs and skin vitamins that will help relieve even the most severely dry, cracked or chapped skin and it absorbs immediately, which is important.

So with a bit of a tra la la, get out your foot file and if you haven’t got one then buy one immediately because nobody needs to have dry ugly skin on their feet. Sarah, Jo and I have had an ongoing love affair with Alida’s foot file for too many years to mention, so if you don’t already own this, then treat yourself and then slap on the Cracked Skin Relief Cream and paint your toe nails red – love a bit of red polish – think it’s the prostitute that resides within (with no apology for that statement – she lives within most of us!).
Cracked Skin Relief Cream by Derma-E £12.50 for 56 grams; Foot File by Alida Beauty £11.95

VH Editorial

This month, Lulu tells us how to look better in our clothes (hey, did you see her on Piers Morgan, she was amazing!), the Beauty Bible girls write about the shelf-life of cosmetics and Jo Fairley throws the focus on Baby Beauty. With my feet up on my desk, I give thanks to our editorial team and I hope you enjoy the features. VH Editorial

Trending in America – Razberi K

I am going to be absolutely honest here and tell you that Shabir and I hate weight loss products, which is rather a novel way to start writing about a weight loss product! The thing that bothers me about weight loss products is that for the most part they are completely hyped up and unrealistic, but occasionally a product comes along that has some good research behind it and so I will share that information, just in case anybody is interested.

A group of Japanese scientists at the Ehime University School of Medicine have recently shown that Razberi-K, a ketone found exclusively within red raspberries, can have some surprising effects on weight gain. Red raspberries have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments and conditions.

A reduction in body fat due to Razberi-K has been attributed to two different mechanisms. The first is the fruits ability to absorb dietary fats in a similar fashion to many of the fat blockers currently on the market. The second is due to an increase in norepinephrine-induced lipolysis, which is most basically the breakdown in the storage of fat cells, stimulated by the release of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine.

It is trending in America, so if you do want to follow that trend and take it, then please do this in conjunction with a sensible balanced diet. The recommended dosage is one capsule twice a day with water.
Razberi-K £25 for 60 Capsules

Top Ten Bestselling Products for May

I know that May isn’t over yet, but I don’t actually think that any of this will change dramatically in the next couple days, so here is our Top Ten for May with my comments by the side, of course. I don’t think any of this will surprise you:

1/ Hyaluronic Acid: This very rarely gets knocked off the top spot. It is the most crucial of all our anti-ageing supplements and most of our faces would fall down without it!
Hyaluronic Acid Capsules High Strength £35 for 30 Capsules

2/ Three Step Kit by Phylia de M: Straight in there and I’m staggered that it has leap-frogged over some pretty strong bestselling supplements, but all power to Kazu and Kidada. What an amazing story. Three Step Kit by Phylia de M £103

3/ Superior Joints: Do you mind if I cover my face with my hands. I can barely bring myself to tell you that we have gone out of stock for the third time. I promise it is not us, we have to stand in line and wait for Natural Eggshell Membrane and it is trending out of control in America. It speaks volumes for the efficacy of the ingredient and we should have it back within ten days. Superior Joints by NHS Labs £29.95 for 60 Capsules

4/ Heal Gel: Always thrilled to see this appear in the Top Ten – it deserves the accolade. Heal Gel £33.50 for 30 ml

5/ Lanolips 101 Ointment: Refer to the Lanolips treat above! Lanolips 101 Ointment £11 for 17.5 ml

6/ Skin Restoring Ceramides: The clever supplement with over nine years of research in Japan, this is the one that miraculously helps to combat dry skin from within giving us all smooth, soft legs (if you take them of course!). Skin Restoring Ceramides £25 for 30 Liquid Capsules

7/ Magnolia Rhodiola Complex: Our bestselling supplement to help relieve stress and anxiety. Magnolia Rhodiola Complex £26 for 60 Capsules

8/ Superior Hair: Still the best supplement for hormonal hair loss in our opinion; just give it time to work. Superior Hair by Food Science of Vermont £25 for 90 Capsules

9/ Ultra Concentrated Liquid Chlorophyll: Another product straight into the Top Ten. Am so thrilled because I know how important it is to take this.
Ultra Concentrated Liquid Chlorophyll £25 for 59 ml

10/ Femergy: Hooked on an energy blast, this is one that so many of you can’t live without. Femergy by Better You £10.25 for 60 Vegicaps

And so we come to the end of another newsletter, so together with Shabir, the VH team and the VH Editorial Team, I thank you once again for your amazing support and loyalty because it really matters. In next month’s newsletter I will be writing about a new range of products that have been in the lab for over three years and I can’t believe they are finally here – well, nearly here. Some of you may guess what these are and some of you won’t, but all I will say is that I am extraordinarily excited.

Have a great June.

With love
