February Newsletter 2011

february victoria health newsletter

Welcome to the February newsletter where we take a look at some new products, we launch a new section on our website, I tell you about two products that Californians are obsessed with, we are in the throes of a Fennel famine and, hold your breath and clap your hands, I bring you the exclusive launch of a new product from Lanolips. Additionally Jo Fairley gets a bit obsessed with her Konjac Sponge, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of an iconic product (with a gift – yessss!) and against all odds (hey, that’s a song) I am beginning to understand ‘social media’. I’ll explain later in the newsletter, but for now we need to get this show on the road, so let’s go:

Lanolips Lemonaid Lip Aid

A great big ‘tra la la’ as I introduce you to the very first limited edition product to the Lanolips family, Lanolips Lemonaid Lip Aid with organic lemon oil. Lemonaid is an ultra rich and creamy whipped lanolin lip treatment with organic lemon oil to help naturally exfoliate, leaving lips fresh, soft and moist. The citric acid in the lemon oil acts as a natural exfoliator on dry dead skin, which is of course something that lots of us suffer from, especially in this weather. Containing over 70% of Lanolips’ exclusive Medical Grade Lanolin, Lemonaid offers a natural high gloss, hydrating lip ointment with a hint of shimmer. Upon application you may feel a slight tingling as it begins to work, but this is completely normal and I don’t want you to panic!

Now, please read this part carefully because I don’t need tears! Lemonaid is a limited edition, as mentioned above, we will be releasing it around the middle of March, but because I know what happened when we released Lanolips 101, I am giving you the opportunity to get on a ‘wait list’ right now and the very minute it lands here, we will send it to you. Just to say that in line with company policy, we will not be debiting your card until we process and send Lemonaid to you. Get excited, get on the wait list and get ready to be one of the first in the UK to use this rather sensational new product. Ms Kirsten Lanolips, we applaud your brilliance, thank you!

GLAMGLOW: Hollywood’s New & Super Advanced Exfoliating Mud Mask

Right, off to LA (in our heads) and news of a product that has been specifically formulated for Hollywood’s entertainment, music, fashion and award industries and us of course!

GLAMGLOW is a rather amazing gentle exfoliating mud mask and I managed to get my hands on a pot of GLAMGLOW recently because I needed to see whether my skin ‘glowed’ as promised. I can normally tell whether a product will work just by looking at the ingredients and I am not swayed by packaging, but I got a bit over-excited when I got my hands on the box because it is more Hollywood than Hollywood! It goes onto the skin really well and I loved the bits of green tea leaf, don’t ask me why, I’m just sad, but these things make me happy. You need to leave it on for about 15 minutes, or until the mask is dry, and your skin will tingle and tighten as it works and then you just rinse the mask off with water.

So did my skin glow? Yes it did! It glowed for several days after I used it and the thing I really like about this mask is that it can be incorporated into any skincare regimen. I’ve taken to using it twice a week because I think it’s rather fabulous to have glowing skin in the midst of a dark, dingy, grey London day, so if your skin needs a bit of a perk-up, then do try my new trick because it works.
GLAMGLOW £69

Fiber

Californians are obsessed with fiber (or fibre spelt the English way!). It’s in the news and everybody is talking about it and taking it because the latest research is saying that including natural fiber in your diet can have extraordinarily long-term natural health benefits. We love being ahead of the curve, so I am replicating what I wrote about Complete Fiber Cleanse in the November newsletter:

Complete Fiber Cleanse helps to cleanse the colon gently, but effectively, it helps alleviate constipation, helps scrape the gut of plaque that hinders the absorption of nutrients and also helps to rebalance the microflora within the gut, which in turn helps to alleviate gastro-intestinal disorders, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome. We recommend cleansing the intestines on a periodic basis because as we eat, the combination of enzymes, fibers and food results in a thick brown substance called mucoid plaque, which adheres to the cell walls impairing the absorption of nutrients, whilst harbouring bad bacteria and parasites. Shabir loves talking about mucoid plaque (there must be something really weird in his psyche), but we all have it and we all need to get rid of it every so often. One course of Complete Fiber Cleanse three or four times a year should do it.
Complete Fiber Cleanse £17.95

Carnosine

As you know, I am a strong believer in preventative health and most specifically my regimen is heavily focused on anti-ageing supplements. Trust me, this is not only to help prevent my face sliding south (although you all know that I would rather die than stop taking HA because it plumps up my skin), but I’m talking about a comprehensive anti-ageing programme. See the thing is, I’m not about to allow my body to succumb to the glycation process (explained below) and I would rather yours didn’t either.

The destructive changes in vital enzymes and other proteins by glucose (blood sugar) is one of the major causes of ageing and it occurs in all of us. This is called ‘the glycation process’ and the effects accumulate over time. In recent years many published scientific studies have shown the multiple beneficial effects of Carnosine supplementation, an amino acid compound, which can help inhibit a variety of ageing conditions, including cell structure damage. Carnosine effectively helps lower blood glucose and may help block changes to cells and tissues that could result in ageing and age-related diseases.

Just to finalise, many of us were taking Pyridoxamine to help prevent sugar damage and then it got discontinued by the manufacturer. A sad day and I went into mourning. Anyway, I promised that we would find an equal replacement, so this is it and you know something, I think it may be even be slightly more effective than Pyridoxamine and that I like – a lot!

Natural Six

Natural Six is a personal lubricant blended with several oils, including coconut oil, natural Vitamin E, Shea Butter and Natural Vanilla Oil. Its primary use is as a personal lubricant for helping to relieve vaginal dryness, but it can also be used as a skin nourishing treatment and a massage oil. A little goes a long, long way and you literally start with one drop and increase as needed. The manufacturers claim that Natural Six is better than a lotion and I tend to agree with them. There are no slick synthetics in this formulation and it feels rather fabulous when you apply it. I know this to be true because I tested it on the back of my hand and if I write any more on this subject, it could be deemed as ‘too much information’. So that’s the end of this section, except to say that this comes from the ‘Miracle Lotion’ people and you know how we all love Miracle Lotion!

Bergamonte

We have received several phone calls over the past couple of weeks with amazing feedback about Bergamonte, which helps lower cholesterol levels naturally. I need to tell you that if Shabir says one more time ‘I told you so’, I think I may have to hit him for displaying ‘parrot-like’ qualities, but this really is such an impressive supplement that I am going to replicate what I wrote in the January newsletter because I know that a lot of people were away and may have missed it:

An article from the Health Sciences Institute (HSI) in America, published earlier this year, reported that the Bergamot extract ‘knocks down cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar in staggering numbers and while you might not want to suffer through eating the extremely acrid bergamot fruit – even to get results like that – you can get its benefits without taking a single bitter bite. Bergamot polyphenolic extract comes in one unique supplement called Bergamonte’. So that’s what the HSI are saying and without getting too scientific, here are some facts:

Citrus Bergamot blocks a key enzyme in the production of cholesterol. Cholesterol is a natural product of the liver and in the right amounts does not pose a problem to the body. However, the body sometimes produces too much cholesterol and Citrus Bergamot helps inhibit an enzyme linked to the liver’s cholesterol production, thus inhibiting the liver’s ability to produce LDL (bad) cholesterol, whilst promoting HDL (good) cholesterol.

According to the Mayo Clinic, raising your HDL (good cholesterol) by 1 milligram per decilitre of blood, may help reduce your heart attack risk by 3%. Human clinical trials have shown bergamot polyphenolic extract to raise HDL by an average of 40% and to lower LDL by 36% after 30 days. Whilst results will obviously vary from person to person, this supplement is being seen as a breakthrough natural product in America for healthy cholesterol support, but it is also being used for weight control and the fight against Metabolic Syndrome, a group of conditions, including obesity, which may put you at risk for heart disease and diabetes.
Bergamonte £24.95 for 60 Capsules

Cysticlean

In urinary health disorders, the urinary tract becomes irritated and inflamed, causing stinging and itching sensations, and is nearly always accompanied by the urgent need to urinate. The predominant causal factor of urinary tract infections is the gradual decline of the female sex organs, which results in the change of pH levels in the bladder. This causes numerous species of bacteria, which live in the bladder, to thrive.

Cysticlean contains a specific extract of the North American cranberry containing high levels of Type A PAC (proanthocyanidins), an antioxidant. PACs have two properties; they help dislodge bacteria from the bladder wall and they help create a slight change in pH levels, which will help prevent bacteria thriving. This clinically proven supplement contains the highest level of PAC available in the UK and most cranberry products cannot offer anywhere near this level of potency needed for women with significant UTI issues.

The current recommendation is to take Cysticlean for three months, but there is no harm in taking this for longer if you have recurrent issues. Whilst predominantly used by women, Cysticlean can also be used by men with urinary tract infections.
Cysticlean £25.75 for 30 Tablets (One Daily)

Petcare

Over the years I have written about a few petcare products, but basically we just tend to list them on our site and we haven’t made a big song and dance about them. We have wanted to create a new sector on our site dedicated to pets for a long time, but with so many things happening elsewhere, it kept being put on the back burner, until now! So I am really happy to announce that we have just launched this new sector and I’m going to kick off by telling you about a couple of products:

Keeper’s Mix: Shabir, who knows about these things (!), believes that every dog and cat, whether on dry or fresh food, should have Keeper’s Mix, a herbal conditioning supplement, incorporated into their diet. This traditional supplement has been based on an old formula obtained from a Dorset gamekeeper and kennel-man, but has been brought up to date with the benefit of modern herbal knowledge and scientific research. Each individual ingredient has an identifiable benefit for a specific part of the body and this very quickly shows in improved vitality, a healthy thick coat, a sparkle in the eye and a general zest for life. It is also extremely beneficial for digestion and for the prevention of joint disorders. Keeper’s Mix is not intended to replace other herbal treatments, but should be given as a supplement to the diet to help regulate the body’s functions and assist in enabling the full benefit of food. Just so that you know, Shabir is a big proponent of a raw food diet for pets and I’m wondering if this is where his love of mung beans stems from. Just saying!
Keeper’s Mix £10.80 for 250 grams

PetSavers Heated Pet Pad: This is where Sarah Stacey’s cat, William, becomes famous. William is very old Burmese cat and he loves his heated pet pad. If William could talk (who remembers Mr Ed the talking horse!) he would tell you that this under-blanket is ideal for cats, small dogs and any small pet to help keep them warm. The pad runs on low voltage, so it can be left on constantly and is very safe. The surface is easily wiped clean and can be rolled up when not in use, although quite honestly with the weather being so bitterly cold recently, I can’t see that it will need to be rolled up any time soon.
PetSavers Heated Pet Pad £40

News and Updates

Yes To

Right, let me give you an update as we will be saying Yes To a lot of very exciting products this year. Next month we have the exclusive launch of Yes To Baby Carrots in the UK, an addition to the Yes To Carrots range and a new exciting product from Yes To Tomatoes. More or less a month later, we will be exclusively launching Yes To Cucumbers, which I know many of you have been waiting for. I’m almost inclined to set up a wait list for Cucumbers next month, but it depends which way the wind is blowing! Later in the year we will launch Yes To Blueberries, the highly acclaimed Age-Refresh range. I know I have previously said that we would launch Blueberries at the beginning of this year, but things changed and I should have kept my mouth shut – ahem!

One more thing about Yes To, and this makes me so happy that I may just climb onto my desk and dance. Many of you may well remember when we originally launched Yes To Carrots on our site. At that time I told you that my ‘hero product’ was the Pampering Hand & Nail Spa, a very special anti-ageing hand treatment. So here’s the thing, we have sold more Pampering Hand & Nail Spa than anybody else in the world and that’s a fact. Second fact: the product is now only made for us (that would be you and me), so if you weren’t around when I wrote about it, here it is again and can I just say a big thank you to the Yes To boys for supporting our needs:

I have a new party trick to tell you about. I used to have fridge parties where people would come and stare at the contents of my fridge, but now I have bathroom parties. Seriously, I march people into my bathroom, put a dollop of the Pampering Hand & Nail Spa in the palm of their hands, tell them to rub their hands together for about two minutes and then make them rinse and dry them. The gasps of astonishment are beyond AMAZING! I know one VH Addict who performs the same trick with her friends (actually I am beginning to think she is cloning my life!), so between us we seem to be getting through pots and pots of the stuff because we are big on sharing, we give ours away and then we have to get some more because nothing, and I mean nothing, treats your hands better than this!

Deep Relax: A Celebration

It’s over to the Beauty Bible girls because Deep Relax from Aromatherapy Associates is 25 years old and it is one of their most favourite beauty products ever-ever-ever. I give you Sarah and Jo (just putting my feet up on my desk whilst they talk to you):

‘We seriously don’t know how we would survive without Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil. It wafts us blissfully sleep-wards almost every night of our lives (in bathrooms 200 miles away from each other!). If either of us ever runs out, it pretty much triggers a full-scale panic. This bath wonder has scooped a Green Beauty Bible Award, on the strength of scores and comments from our tester panels. And it is our default gift for girlfriends, who have never failed to be thrilled by this amazing blend. The reason? It’s like knockout drops!

Because we are total Deep Relax evangelists, for no other reason than our total love for this product, we basically have to tell you that to celebrate Deep Relax’s 25th birthday, VH has 25 complimentary gift bags to give away to the first 25 people to buy Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil. Each gift bag contains travel-sized hero products from the range including Rose Body Cream, Revive Body Wash, De-Stress Muscle Gel and Revive Morning Bath & Shower Oil, which is the morning miracle worker in the range, almost guaranteeing sparkiness and joie de vivre even at an unearthly hour!’ So that’s a wrap and the end of my feet on desk moment.

Health Stars

In this month’s Health Stars, the amazing Shelley von Strunckel puts the emphasis on love: loving yourself first, giving love to others and receiving it, so do check out what Shelley has to say about each of the star signs and the products she recommends. Whilst I am on the subject of astrology, many of you may have read about the 13th star sign and that we may not be who we thought we were, so you will also find an explanation from Shelley about the 13th star sign (or not!) in Health Stars. Let me just say that I was born an Aries I still am an Aries (and a pretty full-blown one at that) and nobody is going to tell me otherwise, so there!

Konjac Sponges

The feedback on these innovative sponges has been amazing, but then they are unlike anything I have ever tried on my skin before. I have to tell you what happened when Jo Fairley tried hers. Now let’s remember that the Beauty Bible girls have seen and tried everything there is to see and try on the beauty scene, but Jo, in her inimitable style, decided to declare that the muslin cloth is dead (‘RIP’ was the official statement from the beauty dungeon in Hastings!) and like me, she is completely besotted with these sponges. If you haven’t experienced the Konjac sensation, I urge you to join us because I swear that my skin’s hydration has improved rather dramatically and Jo is spending half her life using the sponges and the other half ‘tweeting’ about them to the world. More about THAT subject soon!

Fennel

Heaven help me, we are in the midst of a Fennel famine. If only I had a crystal ball then I could forecast these things and there wouldn’t be global shortages. So this is what happened. Vogue tipped Fennel as this year’s must-have supplement, then METRO interviewed Shabir about it. The article got syndicated around the country, Fennel and Shabir got a bit famous and a huge chunk of the population decided that they had to have Fennel because it plays a vital role in digestive disorders, including bloating, and it may also help suppress the appetite. Anyway, click here to read the article and just to say that if you are on the waiting list for Fennel, by the time you read this we should have received a further consignment and I am so sorry you had to wait.

VH Network Plus

Right, this is me eating a great big piece of humble pie because every time the words ‘social media’ were thrown at me, I screamed no, no, no, I am not joining in. Basically, despite many offers from my ‘tweeting/facebook/You Tube/blogging friends’ to help me set it all up, I just ignored them and started to sing instead. The thing is that it was all beyond me and I didn’t have the time or the inclination to learn a whole new set of skills. To my mind it was just too technically challenging for my little pea brain although somehow or other I managed to follow what everybody else was doing, which was a bit of a miracle.

Twitter: At the moment we have two Twitter accounts and you can follow us on both of them if you feel like it! They are www.twitter.com/vh_health andwww.twitter.com/vh_beauty. Primarily we will be tweeting all the latest news on health and beauty, but in addition there will be exclusive launches, twitter only offers and whatever else I can think of that may be exciting.

Facebook: Follow us on Facebook for Facebook only offers and exclusive Facebook launches. If I get really good at all of this, I may well launch Yes To Cucumbers on Facebook. The thing is that as we have only just put this live, we don’t have many friends yet and I don’t want to end up friendless, so please can you like us atwww.facebook.com/victoria-health otherwise I might have to put myself in the corner and cry, or alternatively emigration might be appropriate!

One last thing: an apology to the VH Addicts. On the last Addicts Bulletin I said that I would be sending them an email about VH Network Plus prior to this newsletter going out. The thing is I would have done had my computer in the office not crashed and burned and then to add insult to injury, my internet connection died at home. It was not the cutest moment when I found myself climbing into a cupboard with a candle trying to sort out cables and routers. I need an electrician in my life, somebody please send me a good one!

Feedback

Lash Extender

Thank you so much for all the emails you have sent raving about this product. Just to say that I have put this on the front of our site and there is a short video showing you to apply it (you can also see it on our You Tube channel!). It really is the simplest thing to do, just one coat of mascara, followed by a coat (or two!) of Lash Extender and then a final coat of mascara to seal. Whenever I use it, everybody thinks I am wearing false lashes, which is all rather wonderful really because despite a million and one new innovations in the lashes stakes, this product is over 30 years old and in my opinion it beats everything else hands down, or should that be lashes down!
Lash Extender £24.50

Triple Flu Defense

I love the VH Addict who sent an email to Shabir regarding Triple Flu Defense. Apparently she had been asking Shabir to formulate a product like this for over five years. Well, Shabir didn’t formulate this, the honour lies with ‘Dr Nenninger’ and this tincture has been specifically blended to cope with this year’s strains of the flu virus. Just to reiterate, if you are taking it for preventative purposes you just need to take 20 drops once a week, but should the need arise, then use 20 drops three times a day until full recovery is reached. February is notoriously linked with viral infections, we are highly recommending that you use Triple Flu Defense to help ensure optimum health and wellbeing over the next few weeks.

Research & Development

Essential Fatty Acids

Recent research coming out from the Federal University of Pemambuco, Brazil has shown that the administration of 1 or 2 grams of essential fatty acids given to patients with PMS, resulted in a significant decrease in symptoms. Women who were given capsules containing 2 grams of a combination of gamma linolenic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, other polyunsaturated acids and vitamin E reported significantly eased PMS symptoms at both three and six months after they began the treatment. The leading researcher, Edilberto Rocha Filho reported: ‘The negative effect of PMS on a woman’s routine activities and quality of life may be significant, in addition to the repercussions on economic costs resulting predominantly from a reduction in productivity. Essential oil capsules can now be said to show much promise as a treatment’. We rather like this research and hope that it will help anybody who suffers from PMS. Shabir tends to recommend ChasteBerry Extract alongside essential fatty acids as he believes the combination works in the majority of cases.

Vitamin D3

Once again, the importance of taking Vitamin D3 is in the news again, so no big surprises there then. Vitamin D3 is a hormone the human body makes from the skin’s exposure to direct sunlight and together with Magnesium, D3 is essential to help absorb calcium into our bones.

The NHS, together with Barts London, is currently undergoing clinical trials to investigate the link between low levels of D3 and various health conditions, including depression, diabetes and asthma. Sufficient quantities of D3 cannot be obtained from a healthy diet or sun exposure in the UK. The UK is the most cloudy country in the industrialised world (oh, joyful news!) and is equal to the Alaskan panhandle and Labrador in latitude. Additionally, for five months of the year the sun is too low in the sky for its UVB rays to be strong enough to allow us to synthesize D3. This is called our ‘Vitamin D Winter’.

The Department of Health is constantly being lobbied to supplement food with Vitamin D, this is standard in America, but unfortunately not over here. A little known fact is that Vitamin D has been available free in the UK to low income families during pregnancy, but the poor quality of the product and short shelf-life destroyed the effectiveness of this initiative. So please, please think about including D3 in your daily diet and it is vital that the quality of the product is excellent otherwise you are just wasting your time. DLux 1000 is the first sub-lingual Vitamin D3 spray on the market, it tastes great and is easy to use. It delivers 100 doses of 1000iu each and is used in Great Ormond Street and The University College London Hospitals.

The Final Bit

It occurs to me that there are more than a few things in my life that I wouldn’t want to be without, so in no particular order, here are a few of them:

The Haramaki: If ever I was grateful for something to keep me warm, this is it. Thinking of layering two or three of them!

Magnesium Oil Original Flakes: Completely and utterly besotted with these flakes. Goodbye aches and pains and I feel a bit of a plot coming on. An entire bag of flakes and a few capfuls of Deep Relax. Sleep coma here I come!

Votivo Candles: Love them. Am happily burning my way through our entire stock. Shabir is oblivious to my tax-loss habit. Good!

White Lightening Serum: Because I am just not going to get age spots and this helps prevent hyper-pigmentation really, really well.

Femergy: Hooked. Energy slumps are just not on the agenda.

Bee Sting Lip Plump: Because it makes me smile every time somebody asks me if I have had my lips done. I haven’t!

Professional Illuminating Tweezers: Not too sure how I ever lived without them. Genius.

Right then, it is the end of another newsletter, so I want to thank each and every one of you for your amazing loyalty and for the feedback you give to us. Please do keep an eye on our website over the next couple of weeks because anything can happen and probably will!

With love
