Welcome to the December newsletter, where we have two fabulous new product launches for you and we take a look at some of the highlights of the past year. We also have two new editorial categories for you to explore and participate in, Shabir writes about strategies to help promote healthy joints and he then takes a look at a very common health concern, constipation. On the gift front, Temple Spa, This Works, Neom and Margaret Dabbs have some fabulous seasonal offerings and I reveal Shabir’s five favourite health products of the moment.

Before anything, I just want to say a very big thank you to all of you; your loyalty and support is immeasurable; your continual feedback staggers me at times and our Facebook family is just something else – so, so special. More than ever before, this year has been a year of sharing in many different ways and this newsletter is written in that spirit, so let’s go with the new launches first:

Color Wow – Root Cover Up

Color Wow is the latest creation from internationally acclaimed hairstylist, John Frieda, and industry-renowned products innovator, Gail Federici. John and Gail, co-founders of John’s original professional hair care company, have now gone on to form Federici Brands. Together with John Frieda UK Creative Director, Kevin Moss, John and Gail have created a complete line of professionally formulated products that not only protect, correct and resurrect your hair colour and texture, but also gives your hair the ‘wow’ factor. ‘Root Cover Up’ is the first product to launch from the Color Wow brand.

The first thing I want to do is thank John and Gail for allowing me to launch this new range on VH. With a history of groundbreaking products behind them, including Frizz-Ease and Sheer Blonde, I strongly believe that Color Wow will follow in that genre and for the millions of women who colour their hair, Color Wow means no more roots or ‘in-between colour’ days, just perfect hair colour, every day. See miracles do happen!

So with the focus on solving all of the problems common to colour-treated hair, dark re-growth, grey roots and compromised colour, John and Gail believe they have discovered the missing link in the evolution of colour care and so I give you three things. Firstly, do read my interview with John and Gail, where they talk about their lives, their products and their predictions for the future of hair care; secondly, I have a quote from Kevin Moss and I will then write about ‘Root Cover Up’, which just may well revolutionise your colour enhanced life!

Root Cover Up: Root Cover Up is a professional mineral powder that covers roots really quickly with no mess. It is the easiest thing in the world to use and you can achieve outstanding results in a minute, or two! It comes in four different shades and the best way for me to describe it is that it looks like a retro mascara block in a mirrored compact with a specially designed brush. It sounds simple and it is, but the real leap forward and evolution in this product is that it not only covers grey roots, but it also covers dark roots in colour-treated and highlighted hair. So that means, if you have blonde highlights in your hair, for example, and dark regrowth, the blonde Root Cover Up shade will camouflage your regrowth, so it looks like you have fresh highlights.

As Gail states: ‘Other root cover products make big promises, but have always fallen frustratingly short; there is nothing else on the market that can deliver these results; the formula is oil-based, non-waxy and covers all roots seamlessly; it stays in place and looks completely natural’.

So after three years in the lab of the original John Frieda team, a new star is born, with an industry-first product. Obviously throughout the three years of creation, Root Cover Up has been tested along the way and each and every tester tried to run away with the sample, it is that good!

Root Cover Up should be applied to dry hair; it is water-resistant and will last from shampoo to shampoo; it is fast and easy to use with no mess; you can achieve perfect results in under a minute (dependent on how you use it); it is a 60 application kit, so it will last at least three months under normal use and all this means is that it can dramatically extend the time between colouring your hair.

Let’s do the usage: Starting with dry hair, the dual-tipped brush allows you to customize your Cover Up application. Apply to roots, starting at the scalp and working out. Repeat until roots disappear, then apply to temples and any other grey hair as needed. To extend the life of highlights/streaks, use the small side of the brush, apply to regrowth until the roots are camouflaged.

As with most of our product launches, I have been sitting on this one for months and I have been desperate to share this with you because it is nothing short of sensational, but quite honestly I would expect nothing less from the original John Frieda team. When I first saw the product being used, I nearly collapsed with excitement, but actually thought it would be pretty uncool to land on the floor next to John’s feet, so I threw the products in my bag, maintained my decorum and drove home (like a demented being) to my mirror and when I got there I started to play:

I am a brunette and I have very fine blonde and light brown lights going through my hair, basically to lift the dullness of having a block colour. It is some time since I have had my lights done and so I took the two lightest shades of Root Cover Up, blonde and mid-brown, and put some lights in my fringe. Even though I had watched the demonstrations, I couldn’t believe the dramatic impact within a couple of minutes and I am now completely and utterly hooked. It is completely predictable that I would use the word ‘wow’ when I saw the results, but quite honestly I can’t think of a better word; so on that note all I will say is long live innovative products and just start brushing that colour on!

I will leave the last words to John Frieda: ‘We were the first company to approach hair care like skin care, prescriptively. Over the years I have always resisted listing ranges of nail polishes for several reasons, basically because they are available on every high street. Having said that, I can change my mind in a nano-second when something completely amazing comes along and that is exactly what happened when I discovered Headline Colors – and yes, Shabir’s eyes rolled up to heaven (again!), but a girl has to do, what a girl has to do!

Being a bit of a nail freak, the one thing I detest more than anything is polish that chips and looks ‘tacky’. So I put them to the test and I can report that they lasted two weeks on my nails and I only took each colour off because I wanted to try each of the colours. Before we dip into the winter colours, I just need to say that Headline Colors are salon-approved and the formula boasts a high colour pigment for a rich, intense colour and gloss, plus UV absorbers for staying power. A blend of four plasticisers allows nails to flex without colour chipping, cracking or flaking. The polishes are free of the ‘Big Three’ toxic chemicals, toluene, DBP and formaldehyde. VH Retrospective

This is the section of the newsletter where we take a look back over the past year. Throughout 2012 we launched some amazing new brands and products and I can barely believe that this time last year none of us had even heard of Phylia! So I’m working through the highlights of the year and please read carefully because there are some treats thrown in. I need to live up to my reputation of always writing a bonkers December newsletter and although I have written in each section that there is only one gift per customer, that only applies to each specific offer; you can work your through and get multiple gifts if you so desire!

Instant Miracle Mask

Instant love and an instant miracle; when we launched this brilliant mask from Sarah Chapman we conceded that it was not too glamorous, but oh boy, it delivered. I can’t describe it any better than the Beauty Bible girls, and this is what they think of it:

‘There are, in our experience, very few products that can live up to the ‘miracle’ promise, but hallelujah: here is one that does. And then some. This is not like any other mask you’ve ever tried. Pour 60 ml of water into the shaker and add the contents of a sachet. Shake well until it goes ‘silent’ and then get slathering FAST with the spatula. The pink powder is transformed into a rubbery paste and you’ve got a minute or so to apply it all over your face and the back of your hands. We find it easiest to do this in front of a mirror, to see where it’s going and ensure even distribution.

Then lie back and let the extraordinary mixture work its magic. The real clincher is a mega-dose of Hyaluronic Acid which is ‘trapped’ by the mask, plumping up skin to the point where when Jo tried this for the first time, she looked in the mirror and saw the complexion of a 12-year-old staring back. Every line gone. That particular effect only lasts a few hours, but the skin brightening radiance is enduring and makes this truly worth £9-a-pop. (Console yourself that it’s a fraction of the cost of a super-facial with Ms Chapman herself!) What’s really fun is peeling it off afterwards. So satisfying’!

Later in the year, we launched ‘Sculpting Chin and Jaw Lift’, which was inspired by Sarah Chapman’s dramatic skin sculpting, reshaping and firming clinical treatments. As I mentioned earlier in the newsletter, I can barely believe that this time last year none of us had heard of Phylia. With my hand on my heart, I can honestly say that launching Phylia de M. in May of this year has been one of the most rewarding experiences in the history of VH. Each product is worldwide ‘best in category’ in my opinion and guided by Kazu Namise and Dr Miyayama, Phylia’s founding scientist, we are on a mission to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of each person we touch.

The journey began with the release of Clean, Condition and Connect and given that I have written about each of these products on every month’s newsletter since May, suffice it to say that I am literally blown away by your response and the dramatic results that these products have achieved. The one thing that I will repeat here is that each time I receive an email about hair regrowth from a customer with major health issues, a tear rolls down my face (I’m a big softie!). At this point I just want to acknowledge Kazu and Dr Miyayama, who behind the scenes have been working alongside some of our customers on a one-to-one basis to ensure that the Phylia products create positive results as they battle with illness, none more so than with Fulphyl, which we launched last month.

On last month’s newsletter I stated that I believed ‘Fulphyl’ to be the single-most important health product to have been released in the past decade and that I was pretty sure that statement would suffice for the next decade too. Before we head into the treat, and of course there is treat coming, this from a customer and it is her third email on the subject:

‘I know I shouldn’t go on about it and waste your precious time, but this stuff (the entire range) is sensational. My husband came back late last night from a business dinner and said that my skin looked so amazing, so taut and so beautiful (note, I was wearing no make-up as I was already in bed!). Please can you go back to your ‘lover boys’ in LA and ask them to now create a mask or something that will make us all look like babies again!’

In response, I will say that my ‘lover boys’ will be in London at the end of this week, I’m beyond excited and I can tell you that some heavy duty research is going on right now which will blow skincare, as we know it, out of the water. A mask would be good; they have some pretty sensational masks, but they are only for professional use, so I’m going to sit on Bryan and Alec and I will not let them go back to LA until they agree to create a home-facial-kit for us. In fact I may well start a petition, but for now let’s go with the treat:

HealGel

September 2012: HealGel. We launched the original HealGel approximately five years ago and as I wrote on the September newsletter, the HealGel journey has been a very emotive one for each of us involved. Created by five of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons, we re-launched the original HealGel as HealGel Intensive and released two new products, HealGel Face and HealGel Eye.

HealGel Intensive is a revelation and it has a massive following; I’m not at all surprised and I’m reverting back to the Beauty Bible girls because I’ve used up all my words about this little pot of wonder over the past five years:

‘We can’t add much to the roll-call of rave reviews on HealGel, but the bottom line is we both know so many people who have used this after surgery, or after some kind of other body trauma, and experienced extraordinarily swift healing. It’s good for burns, redness, bruises, strains and stretch-marks (and anecdotally – rosacea and wrinkles). Since Sarah was one of the first people to write about HealGel, it has become a bit of a legend in skin circles – and we still feel pretty evangelical about it’.

Another month, another launch and I wrote about Miracle Glo on last month’s newsletter and the response has been so overwhelming, it goes straight into ‘the treat’ section of this newsletter and also into our top five bestselling products over the past month. None of this surprises me of course because I have been using Miracle Glo for a year and in my opinion it absolutely lives up to its description of ‘make-up artist in a bottle’.

You can read what I wrote about it here and several people have emailed me to say they are using it as a primer, as opposed to brushing it on top of foundation, with magnificent results. Well, you learn something every day and put to the test, it is quite wonderful. I’ve taken to using it twice, as a primer and then again on top of my make-up, if I am wearing foundation, and now this from a customer:

Viva VH!

What a year! We’ve had riots on 60 Seconds, we launched the VH Community and more recently our weekly calendar, Ask a Pharmacist Friday and the Pop-Up shops. A couple of weeks ago I had a ‘mad moment’ when I kept 60 Seconds open for 30 minutes in the morning and afternoon, but it was my way of giving back, most especially to our dedicated customers who are often unable to fight the crazy 60 Seconds rush. Our Facebook family continues to be a great source of amusement and joy and is the place where we talk to each other in real-time. I am indebted to the customers who share their experiences and at times know the answers to questions better than I do, and I also adore reading your comments on the VH editorial section of our site. Thank you.

I have yet more excitement for you, which I will get to in a moment, but the first thing I want to say is that the work we are doing now is the fulfillment of a long-held vision and there is a lot more to come throughout 2013. I always wanted VH to be a ‘destination’ rather than just ‘another’ website selling products because quite honestly I would find that so shallow that I would have to kill myself!

In demonstration of the above statement, I am actually very much alive and kicking and beyond myself with excitement as we launch two new editorial sections on our site. The first, VH Eats, was conceived on Facebook and you can read how and why this happened on my opening editorial. I am saying little else because I can’t wait for you to see it and participate. Andrew and I have been playing around with the next new editorial section for the past 18 months, but all good things are worth waiting for and I hope you enjoy VH Local. Again, please read my opening editorial on this new feature and I know I am utterly predictable, but our first port of call just had to be LA and it just had to be written by Kazu Namise of Phylia fame. Since May, Kazu has become an integral part of the VH family and is an avid contributor to our Facebook page. We loved putting this one together and I had to resist prompting her with the places that I love in LA. Again, let me know what you think and I would love you to participate in this too, wherever you live.

In addition this month, Melanie Harrison (VH Addict extraordinaire) writes about being ‘Out on a Limb’, which I know many of you will relate to. I think more than anything, having an open forum helps so many of us and it is important that holding hands gives us a sense of safety – we are no longer alone. I have received so many emails about this subject, which is why I really want to generate more ways to share and in this vein, our products become secondary to the profound sense of community. Melanie, I thank you for your honesty and bravery. Writing this on an open platform is no small thing.

Temple Spa

I think most of you know that I have a big soft spot for Temple Spa; I think their products are sensational and I adore working with Liz and Mark Warom, co-founders of the brand. Last week I sent out a dedicated Temple Spa email, which highlighted their Christmas gift offering. I want each and every one of these gifts, but I’m holding back because they are of course limited editions, but my three favourites (just so that you know) are The Home Spa Collection, Absolute Pleasure and Do Not Disturb (I’m thinking of hanging the ‘Do Not Disturb’ lavender pillow on my desk) and I’m also eyeing up the rather decadent ‘Sparticles’.

Finally, as many of know, Skin Truffle recently won a prestigious award from Beauty Bible, thoroughly deserved in my opinion. Shabir’s Five Favourite Health Products

The Girl Did Good

Many of you may have seen several interviews in the press with Hilary Boyd, the author of Thursdays in the Park, which recently shot straight to the top Amazon’s bestselling downloads, which is a romantic tale, tracking the unfolding love affair between a couple in their 60’s. In one of the interviews given she was misquoted as saying she had worked in a vitamin ‘factory’ and I laughed so much I had tears rolling down my face! So just to say that this is ‘our’ Hilly, otherwise known as PH (Princess Hilly), we are all so completely proud of her and she is forever a part of the VH family.
