The Serious Side Of Self-Care

As we swiftly approach the penultimate month of the year, I think it is safe to say that 2017 has been tough on all of us in some way or another. For me it has primarily been the global events that have taken a toll. Between successive record breaking, once in a lifetime natural disaster events, the rise in white supremacy and police brutality, multiple mass shootings, frequent terror attacks, a legitimate threat of nuclear war and now the Harvey Weinstein scandal to name just a few of them, I just feel like the world is descending into actual and total madness.

At the start of the year I fully expected things to be difficult (partly thanks to the incoming US President), but I naively never expected them to be this bad and I also never anticipated how much it would affect my day-to-day life. It is not an easy thing to talk about, but it’s like I was feeling this pervasive sense of sadness and hopelessness underneath it all as my default emotions and to be honest, 2017 has depressed me. It has impacted my life in multiple ways and had a detrimental effect on my health and of course, my skin. Thankfully, once I eventually discovered the true meaning of “self-care” I was able to begin to take control again and that’s what I want to talk about today. Read More…

LixirSkin

One of the things I love about Victoria Health is how thoughtful they are with the brands they choose to launch. It takes a lot for Gill to add a new skincare line to the site and with the last one being The Ordinary, you know LixirSkin has to be something special to make the cut (spoiler alert: it is). I was so pleasantly surprised when the products arrived at my door a few weeks ago and have been so excited to talk about them since my very first use. Beyond the fact that this new brand is a millennial’s dream in terms of branding and packaging, it also has a lot going on formula wise and I have a feeling LixirSkin is destined for big things.

LixirSkin launched on the October newsletter and like Gill wrote, Colette Haydon is not new to the skincare industry (interview here). She has worked behind the scenes for over 20 years and has formulated countless best-selling products for brands like REN, Jo Malone and HealGel. REN was one of the first brands I turned to when I went all “natural” a few years ago, so I know for a fact I have already had Colette’s creations on my face without even knowing it and I’m sure many of you have, too. The Problem With Instagram

This article has been a long time coming because Instagram has changed a lot over the past several months and not just by design, but in how we use it. This year I have noticed a pretty big shift in how we behave, post and interact etc, and I know I am not the only one who’s picked up on this. In particular, the skincare community is not quite what it used to be. What started out as a fun way to share a burgeoning passion for skincare and connect with others has morphed into some sort of social media high school with cliques, gossiping and even bullying. I have been surprised, shocked and saddened by a lot of what I have seen recently and it has been so disappointing. There have been times when I have felt anxious over something that has happened on Instagram, wanted to cry over what has been said to me and even considered deleting my account more than once. My Journey – Arly

new plant growth

It has been a whirlwind month since I officially joined the VH inner sanctum and I still can’t get over it. One of the reasons this new role is so special to me is because Victoria Health saved my life and not figuratively, I mean that literally. Gill, Shabir and the dearly missed Sally Brampton helped me through one of the most difficult times in my life and their collective help, knowledge and support changed me in so many ways. Without them I wouldn’t have a blog, wouldn’t be as passionate about skincare and certainly wouldn’t be here writing this. I know many of you will have only just discovered me through the articles I’ve written on here or from my blog or Instagram, but I have been here with you as a fellow VH Addict for years, and today I want to share my journey with you.

We have all heard the cliché adage regarding health, wellness and skin, how it’s all connected and that you can’t have one without the other, but for me that was never true. For most of my life I existed in the realm of “generally” – generally good health, generally good skin and generally active (but not really), all while eating whatever I wanted and generally looking very well.
