Coenzyme Q10 helps to maintain a healthy heart, muscles, gum tissue and the immune system, all of which have a high-energy requirement, as well as a high antioxidant requirement. It is a vitamin-like substance found in all parts of the body whose actions resemble those of vitamin E. There are ten common substances designated coenzyme Qs, but coenzyme Q10 is the only one found in human tissue. This substance plays a critical role in the production of energy in every cell of the body. It aids circulation, stimulates the immune system, increases tissue oxygenation particularly of the heart as well as helping to prevent periodontal disease, and has vital anti-ageing and energising effects.

Heart muscle cells use fats as their primary source of energy. CoQ10 is required for the metabolism of fatty acids within the cell's mitochondria. The energy produced is used by the heart muscle tissue for the mechanical pumping action, which ensures effective circulation of the blood through the vascular system. The amount of coenzyme Q10 present in the body declines with age, so it should be supplemented in the diet especially for people who are over the age of 50 or on statins since these block the formation of this crucial enzyme.

CoEnzyme Q10 also prevents the oxygenation of cholesterol.  When cholesterol oxidises, the result is deposition of it onto the arteries which potentially leads to cardiovascular concerns including elevated blood pressure.

CoEnzyme Q10 helps to oxygenate all the muscle tissues of the body including the gums. This property helps to prevent the anaerobic bacteria, that thrive in the pockets of gum tissues, from thriving and causing gum destruction. The recommended dose of 100mg prevents the loose teeth syndrome and gum tissue destruction.

Signs of Coenzyme Q10 deficiency: Periodontal disease, diabetes, muscular dystrophy.

How Can I Treat My Dry, Cracked Feet?

Q: I have very rough skin on my feet (and hands), with some cracks on my heels. They feel and look horrible and I need to do something before I can wear summer sandals. A: The biggest problem that podiatrist Margaret Dabbs (margaretdabbs.co.uk) sees in older feet is dehydration... read more

The Glam Guide to Spring

I always feel a bit penned in towards the end of March. Spring hasn’t quite arrived on our doorsteps and, feeling cooped up after what seems like months of snow, sleet and rain, I like to make a list of all the places I’ll visit when the sun comes out. A Little Glamorous Black Book of places to... read more

Summer Legs

Ah, summer days. How gloriously sun-drenched. How carefree. Carefree, that is, unless you have ‘leg issues’. From late September through till mid-spring, of course, anyone who feels theirs are less-than-show-offable can retreat into opaque tights, and nobody’s any the wiser. But come shorter hemlines and days when even 10 deniers... read more

Stress and Injury

There can be no doubt that the positives of an active lifestyle far outweigh any negatives, but unfortunately with any training and exercise comes a risk of injury. We’ve written articles in the past on combating low energy and motivation levels but there is surely no obstacle more frustrating than injury. There is never a good time to pick up an injury, but more often than not... read more

Common Foot Complaints

You would be utterly surprised at the number of "everyday" skin conditions which can affect the skin and nails of the feet and with this in mind I have been working on the formulation of a new Hygiene Cream for feet to address many of these everyday conditions. The hygiene cream launch coincides with the celebration by Margaret Dabbs Clinics of ‘World Foot Health Awareness Month’ in May and is a must-have in any bathroom cabinet... read more

Tomato Beauty

In the 16th Century, tomatoes were given the name ‘love apples’. The story goes that the Spanish conquistadors, returning home from Peru, brought with them a new and delicious plant from which could be harvested the most luscious, juicy, vibrantly coloured fruit. Some Europeans thought it poisonous. (It is, after all, a member of the... read more

Free Your Breath

Through all the years I’ve been trying to stay healthy by eating well, exercising, taking vitamins, attempting to meditate, it’s only now I really understand that breathing properly is the simplest trick most of us miss in the equation. We can be forgiven of course, as it’s something we all do automatically - approximately 12-18 times a minute of every day. We don’t have to give it a second... read more

Gill meets Margaret Dabbs

What was the inspiration that drove you to launch Margaret Dabbs, London? I was working as a Podiatrist in my own Clinic in Central London and I felt the need to treat feet the way I wanted mine to be treated. I wanted them to feel good, but also to look good, and I set about creating treatments that did just that! It really wasn’t... read more
