Welcome to the August newsletter where, as if by magic, a whole lot of new products have landed on my desk and a rare thing has happened – I actually love each and every one of them and I think you will too. It is a constant source of fascination how these products come in front of us, but for the most part it is a collective collaboration, so my eternal thanks are extended to all those people who constantly support and encourage us to make a real difference to each of your lives. I’ve written this a thousand times before, but I would rather die than lie to you about the efficacy of products and I do like to sleep at night, so the mission continues.
Also in this newsletter, we celebrate the comeback of a hair care range originally launched in the 80’s (just give me a retro product and I’m happy), we take an in-depth look at Saffron and why it is a ‘buzz’ supplement in America, read all about ‘The Backlash’ and I have all the latest news from the Beauty Bible girls and the Legologist (get ready to applaud Ms Shapland, she has just won a BIG award – clap, clap, clap!). Let’s go:
eyeSlices
When I first heard about eyeSlices I got shivers right down my spine because I knew I wanted them, but I wanted them right in that moment (such an Aries girl!) and I couldn’t wait because I just knew they were going to be a ‘miracle product’. Within four hours, give or take five minutes or so, I had the entire range on my desk and the UK distributor the other side of my desk. And so it is with enormous pleasure that I can tell you that we have been given the exclusive retail launch of eyeSlices in the UK. Can you imagine if we hadn’t, that man would have been dead meat, which would have been rather tragic because he is very nice! Read on:
Developed and produced in South Africa, with over ten years of research and development behind them, eyeSlices are a global first in cryogel polymer technology, a dermal delivery system that helps to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles, wrinkles, tiredness and redness and allergy symptoms in just five minutes – yes, yes, five minutes! This technologically advanced dermal delivery pad is unique in that it provides an instant cooling sensation without a fridge, although I do store mine in the fridge and they will last slightly longer if you keep them cool.
So there are four different versions of the eyeSlices and for best results you should use them once a day, preferably in the morning. All you do is remove the slices from its packaging, dab off excess moisture and place one slice over each closed eye and gently press the slices to mould into the eye contours. Just leave them on and relax for five minutes while the eyeSlices do all the work. After you have used them, place them back into their original container and seal it shut. Each pack of eyeSlices are re-usable up to ten times and the only problem you are going to have is that you are going to want all of them – just like me!
Legendary Eyes – Puffiness and Dark Circles: Specifically formulated for puffiness and dark circles, these were the first ones I tested and they certainly did what they promised. The extract of the Black Elder tree’s flower helps reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles and promotes a distinct anti-inflammatory effect. Other ingredients, including White Lily and Pfaffia Paniculata root helps to strengthen the vascular wall and repair tissue.
Legendary Eyes £12.95
inVogue Eyes – Tiredness and Redness: Specifically formulated for tired and red eyes and especially effective if you are going to stare at a computer all day long, or you are doing a long haul flight (take them in your hand baggage and wear them in-flight). The extracts of Alpine Skullcap help soothe and restore red and tired eyes and a highly concentrated apple serum increases the freshness and radiance of the skin, ensuring that the skin cells are supplied with moisture-giving ingredients.
InVogue Eyes £12.95
Candy Eyes – Anti-Ageing: Get your beauty sleep in five minutes ... just close your eyes and imagine your lines and wrinkles being soaked up by the Candy Eye slices. With the regenerative and protective extracts of the English Ribwort Plantain leaves, Candy Eyes helps to reduce the signs of ageing by enhancing collagen synthesis, which in turn helps reduce the appearance of fine lines. Liftonin, a compound containing the natural vegetable astringent obtained from the oak tree, demonstrably, but gently firms the skin.
Candy Eyes £12.95
Happy Eyes – Anti-Allergy: I am extraordinarily lucky because I don’t suffer from hay fever or other allergies (aside from my near-death-experience with Scotchgard!), but I know plenty of people who do and I have been told that these are pretty damn miraculous for helping to soothe the effects of irritants. So if you suffer from everyday allergens, do please try these because the feedback we are getting is pretty astounding and we love that, but then so will your eyes. Er, I think I need these in my fridge, just in case – never say never!
Happy Eyes £12.95
Just to finish this section, we are pretty used to astounding products, but every so often research and development will take an enormous stride forward and I personally believe that this is only the beginning for this incredible quick-fix innovation. Clever, clever, clever! Perhaps somebody would like to give them an award – pretty please because I’m in an award-winning frame of mind!
Complete Fiber Cleanse
Many of you have been using Fiber FOS for a long time, but as ever research and development creates ‘next generation’ products, such as Complete Fiber Cleanse which helps to cleanse the colon gently, but effectively. Complete Fiber Cleanse helps to alleviate constipation, scrape the gut of plaque that hinders the absorption of nutrients, rebalance the microflora within the gut, which in turn helps to alleviate gastro-intestinal disorders, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Complete Fiber Cleanse contains psyllium husk fibre, acidophilus, herbs to soothe the gut walls and green foods to nourish the body. It really is vital to cleanse the intestines because as we eat, the combination of enzymes, fibres and food results in a thick brown substance called mucoid plaque, which adheres to the cell walls impairing the absorption of nutrients and harbours bad bacteria and parasites. Not the most glamorous explanation in the world, but hey I need to tell it as it is and we all have mucoid plaque. Smart!
Complete Fiber Cleanse by Food Science of Vermont £17.95 for 168g
African Baobab Fruit Powder
Over the past few years we have seen the emergence of many ‘superfoods’ including Goji Berry and Maqui Berry to name just two. How we loved Goji, we still do, but Shabir has discovered a new ‘superfood’ and he is having several moments about this because he thinks it is completely wonderful and is recommending it to everybody he talks to. It is called African Baobab Fruit and the Baobab tree is known as ‘the tree of life’ or ‘the upside down tree’ and is a symbolic icon of the African landscape. Found in 31 African countries, it is the most abundant tree on the continent and the Baobab fruit is highly nutritious and extremely versatile.
Baobab fruit powder is a pale powder that forms naturally inside the fruits of the Baobab tree and is one of the most nutritional fruits in existence. It has an exotic tangy flavour, often described as ‘caramel pear with subtle after tones of grapefruit’ and it contains high natural levels of Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium and Potassium. With an ORAC value of over 650/g, the Baobab fruit powder has an antioxidant level of more than double that of Goji berries and more than six times that of cranberries, blueberries and blackberries, so it’s a bit of a superstar!
African Baobab Fruit Powder is delicious in smoothies, sprinkled on cereal, added to plain yoghurt and ice-cream. So here is a recipe for a quick and refreshing Baobab Smoothie, just whisk it all together in a blender and drink it for breakfast: 200 ml apple juice, 100 ml natural yoghurt, 1 frozen banana, 180g blueberries and 10-20g Baobab Fruit Powder. Voila!
African Baobab Fruit Powder £11.95 for 250 grams
Hairwonder – First Aid For Your Hair
Picture the scene: it’s 5.30 in the morning and I am sitting on my bathroom floor surrounded by tubs, bottles and tubes of hair masks, hot oils, shampoos, hair repair creams et al - another testing session is about to commence. The Hairwonder series was first introduced in 1985 and at that time it was a major innovation in hair repair. I begun by slapping on copious amounts of the Hair Repair Hairmask and then wrapping my head with cling film (oh, the sheer glamour of it all!), I needed to find out if these products had stood the test of time and if they could compete in today’s sophisticated marketplace. The result was a resounding YES. Read on:
Before I start writing about some of the individual products, I just need to explain that although the name of the manufacturer is Henna Plus, the Hairwonder products will NOT colour your hair (reminding me of teenage years secretly locked in the bathroom with a sachet of Hint of a Tint and a bottle of vinegar) because there are two types of henna, the one that colours your hair red and the one that gives your hair shine. We are talking the latter.
Hairwonder Hair Repair Mask: This is an intensive formula that can help repair damaged hair in one single treatment and will help revitalize your hair. My hair is not really damaged, but I often have visions (deluded of course) of having fabulous ‘Cleopatra’ hair and I have to tell you that my hair really did shine more than normal after using it and the best bit is that a few people asked me what I had done to my hair because it looked fabulous. Not Shabir of course, he just stood and laughed at me, but who cares. I’ve decided I’m going to have a weekly mask with this stuff because it works. Oh tra la la!!
Hair Repair Mask £7.99 for 200 ml
Hairwonder Hot-Oil: I love hot oil treatments and they call this one the ‘energy kick’ because in just one minute, dull, dry, damaged or frizzy hair gets a dose of hydration and will help your hair to look healthy, strong and shiny. I know that the instructions recommend keeping it on for just one minute, but I tend to ignore this and I have been known to walk around with hot oil on my head for hours. Makes me happy, don’t know why, it just does!
Hair Repair Hot-Oil £5.99 for 100 ml tube or Hair Repair Hot-Oil £4.79 for 3 x 15 ml tubes
Hairwonder Hair Repair Cream: This has been formulated for dry, dull, static and damaged hair and instantly makes your hair look healthy, shiny, easy to comb, whilst helping to prevent hair loss, hair breakage and split ends. It can be used by all hair types and should be used daily – it is non-greasy and does not to be rinsed out.
Hair Repair Cream £5.99 for 100 ml
Also available in the range are Hairwonder Serum Capsules, Heatcare Protector, Hair Repair Shampoo, Wax Therapy, Volumizer Shampoo and Fluid-Hair Volumizer. Like the word volumizer. Volumizer. Volumizer. Volumizer!!

All About Lips
We receive so many emails about dry, cracked lips and I’ve been searching for a gentle exfoliating lip scrub for absolutely ages. Trust me, I’ve tried loads of them (on your behalf of course) and now I’ve found one that I think is fabulous. It is called ‘Skin Botanical Lip Scrub’ and it comes from the same wonderful American company that created The All Nighter Styling Powder. Loaded with shea butter and cinnamon, this is a soothing exfoliator that will eliminate dry, cracked lips almost immediately. You only need to use a tiny bit, so the little pot will last for ages. Just gently rub it over your lips and either tissue or rinse off – I prefer to rinse it off just in case you needed to know. Use it every day until your lips get back into condition and then just once or twice a week.
Skin Botanical Lip Scrub by A Beautiful Life £17.95 (All Nighter is £18.95 in case you haven’t discovered it yet!)
Whilst on the subject of lips, Bee Sting Lip Plump by Valerie Beverly Hills has consistently remained in our top five bestselling beauty products of all time. Little wonder, it is completely fabulous and it works. I use it all the time and I’m forever being asked if I’ve had my lips done. No, No, No – they are not done, they are all mine, I would never, ever go down the injection route (also see later in the newsletter) and who on earth needs to with products like this!
Bee Sting Lip Plump £20 by Valerie Beverly Hills
OraBrush Tongue Cleaner
There are tongue cleaners and then there is OraBrush, a wonderful new innovative product just landed in the UK from America where it is selling in the millions. Little surprise really, because it is genius and it is so simple. Tongue bacteria accounts for 80-90% of bad breath and for 9 in 10 people bad breath is caused by either gum disease or bacteria that grow on your tongue. To clean effectively, bacteria must be raised to the surface of the tongue and then drawn out. Brushing or scraping alone will not be as effective as the OraBrush that has a brush and scrape action, so it both lifts dirt with the brush and removes it with the scraper. It is similar to a surgical hand brush and the soft bristles clean deep into indentations on the tongue, unlike a harsh toothbrush and it is so effective that no paste, gels or chemicals are required.
To use, simply moisten the tongue with water or mouthwash and gently brush tongue several times with the OraBrush using a back and forth motion. Remove the residue generated from brush by scraping the tongue with the scraper located at the top of the brush. Rinse mouth to remove the loosened material and your tongue will feel clean and fresh. Clean the OraBrush with water after each use. It really is that easy and of course we all have one in our bathrooms. Just to be neat, I am going to write a couple of lines about Peri-Gum Mouth Wash Concentrate because I think everybody needs a bottle of this stuff. It combines seven herbal extracts that help to improve gum disorders such as bleeding gums, swollen gums, infected gums as well as helping to prevent mouth ulcers. I love Peri-Gum, most especially because it got rid of a horrid infection I had a couple of years ago within a couple of hours – seriously!
OraBrush £4.95; Peri-Gum Mouth Wash Concentrate £14.30
Beauty Bible
We have been overwhelmed with questions that you want to ask Sarah and Jo, the Beauty Bible girls, so this month I have a very special treat for you and they will be answering two questions, instead of one, on the Beauty Bible page. The first question is all about body lotions and I’m not going to spoil your treat by telling you what they have written, but I will just repeat a small section here because I just love that they know everything about everything:
‘Our key tip with body lotions is to forget that old wives’ tale about ‘applying to damp skin to trap the moisture’. If you’re moisturising with a body lotion after a bath, pat skin dry with a towel first. Manufacturers spend years working on the perfect formulation, and then if you apply it to a damp surface you’ll just dilute that careful balance’.
So now we all know and you can read more of this and a question about the application of sun block by clicking here. Meanwhile the girls have their heads well and truly down as they put the finishing touches to their next blockbuster, The Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible. I have had a sneak preview of one page and on the strength of that I would like to put my hand up and volunteer to proof-read the entire book because I’m not sure I can wait until it’s published next year. Girls, my phone number is ........!

The Legologist
As many of you will have noticed, each week on the front of our site ‘The Legologist’ (aka Kate Shapland) chooses a product that she really respects. What many of you may not know is that there is a story behind each product choice and Kate writes about them on her blog (thelegroom.blogspot.com). As I have previously written, Kate is provocative and amusing and she doesn’t hold back, so for the August edition of The Legology, Kate continues to tell it as it is and I hope you enjoy reading her page as much as I do. And just so that you know, Kate has won a CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Achiever Award 2010 for her fabulous work on the Saturday Telegraph Magazine and the Telegraph website. Hey, hey Kate – you go girl and many, many congratulations from all of us. Am pondering upon the thought of somebody winning an award for writing on VH – er, like pigs fly across a pink sky!!

The In-Depth on Saffron
In a study published earlier this year, a team of Dutch researchers demonstrated what many clinicians have long suspected, compulsive eating is as much a matter of brain chemistry as behaviour. Following through, French researchers (Cedric Bourges, Jacques Noury and Bernard Gout) identified a natural appetite regulator to help provoke the feeling of being full. This extract is derived from Saffron, which has been used in traditional Persian medicine for centuries as a treatment for insomnia and anxiety.
In one of the most compelling findings on emotional eating to date, the Dutch researchers reported that compulsive eating is strongly correlated with poor impulse control, depression, anxiety and relapse following weight loss and can result from a common gene variant for the molecule that transports serotonin, one of the body’s primary mood regulators. A proprietary extract of Saffron has been shown to help reduce the impulses behind uncontrolled ‘between-meal snacking’ safely and effectively. Scientists believe it works primarily by boosting levels of serotonin, helping to reduce the depression, anxiety and stress central to compulsive eating.
Moving on from the above, further recent studies have also shown evidence of efficacy in the maintenance of eye health due to Saffron’s rich content of lutein. Finally, Saffron is being mooted as ‘the new St Johns Wort’, so all in all, I would say that this is a remarkably versatile supplement and Shabir thinks it’s pretty cool too – so that’s ok then!

News and Feedback
I am going to start this section by reporting on the amazing success of the launch of the BodyWave. You all know just how fabulous I think the BodyWave is and you also need to know that I am still using it every night. Now that may not be a remarkable thing to you, except I need to tell you that I get bored with things very quickly, but this machine (alongside the Reviber Plus of course) is an absolute constant in my life. If you missed the July newsletter please click here to read all about it. I really believe that I am sleeping far better by using the BodyWave about half an hour before I go to bed and I also find that my mind isn’t jumping around all over the place, which in itself is a miracle. So would I recommend the BodyWave for stress relief? Absolutely I would and if you suffer from constipation, the BodyWave will help ease the issue considerably, alongside easing back pain and help to reduce swollen ankles and legs. Hurray!
The BodyWave £135; The Reviber Plus £243.70
Extrazyme-13: As many of you know, I am a massive fan of Extrazyme-13 and have taken it since we first launched it, approximately three years ago. It is of course a brilliant product, which is why Sarah Stacey, Health Editor of the Mail on Sunday YOU magazine (Health Notes) wrote the following:
‘If you are – let me put this delicately – of a certain age, and are slim but suffer from bloating, it could be due to a lack of digestive enzymes (which happens with passing years). This means that instead of breaking down completely in the gut, food stays there stagnating, causing your tummy to swell. The simple answer is to tuck a supply of Extrazyme-13 in your bag and take one capsule with each main meal. It also helps to prevent all the uncomfortable symptoms of indigestion’.
So you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out what happened next – an official global shortage of Extrazyme-13. By the time you read this, we should have received a further consignment from America, but if you were on the waiting list, I am so sorry, but these things happen and nobody could have predicted the rampage.
Extrazyme-13 by LifeTime Vitamins £21 for 90 Capsules
The Tingli Head Massager: Here we go again, another product that is on a wait list and I am so, so sorry to have kept you waiting, but there are certain things that are completely out of my control. Having said that, The Tingli is rather fabulous, it is a head massager specifically designed to stimulate nerves and acupressure points on the scalp and neck, so I sincerely hope that by the time you read this, they are back in stock because they are ever so cute and ever so addictive and I really, really don’t want to have to drive over to the manufacturers and stand there screaming for stock, but trust me, if I have to I will – anybody want to come with me?!!!
The Tingli £4.50
Femergy: I’ve taken to walking round with a couple of boxes of Femergy in my bag because everywhere I go, people are talking about it, so I’m ever ready! Femergy has gone viral and I think it would be easier to count the women who aren’t taking it than those who are. So on the advice and recommendation of most of the leading health and beauty journalists in the UK, and me, if you are looking for the one product that will charge your batteries then this is it. So get ready for abundant energy, stamina and mental alertness and just by the way, it also helps elevate moods and helps to increase sexual alertness. Oh my!
Femergy £9.95 for 60 Vegicaps
Magnificent Magnesium: Shabir and I have long been huge fans of magnesium, most particularly magnesium oil. Research and development continues to highlight the astounding benefits of transdermal magnesium. Magnesium Oil Joint Spray is the latest addition to the Magnesium Oil range and contains the addition of glucosamine sulphate together with the cooling and calming effect of menthol and the anti-inflammatory and pain relieving qualities of wintergreen oil. As I have written before, Shabir asked the manufacturers to formulate this blend and if you suffer from joint pain, then do please try this because the feedback we are getting is pretty phenomenal. I have also written previously, that if Shabir can help formulate a product, then so can I! In next month’s newsletter you can read all about the two products I’ve asked for and I’m telling you it’s going to be L-O-V-E of the highest order. Let’s heal the world with Magnesium – yesssss!
Magnesium Oil Joint Spray £11.95

The Backlash
Well it had to happen, the backlash against ‘cosmetic injections’ is in full swing and we all knew it was coming. Writing in The Sunday Times, Style magazine, Edwina Ings-Chambers reports that beauty brands are putting a greater emphasis on facial treatments in a move away from ‘face-freezing’. I have always believed that there is nothing worse than ‘playing games’ with your skin because in the end it will catch up with you and it won’t look cute, in fact it can often look downright ugly. Many years ago, Dallas Port, who is one of the top aestheticians in Los Angeles and looks after many A–List celebrities, told me that her most beautiful client was a woman in her seventies who had never been near a needle, but had looked after her skin inside-out (supplementation and topical products). So, we are going to take at a rather impressive new facial treatment that you can do at home, but if you will excuse me, I just need to write a short paragraph on supplementation first.
A few weeks I was having dinner with a friend who told me she wanted my skin, so I gave her three supplements and told her that I swore that these were the secret weapons to great skin. They were of course Hyaluronic Acid (HA), Resveratrol with Pterostilbene and IdealOmega 3. I have always maintained that there is little future in paying vast sums of money for ‘miracle beauty potions’ if you don’t get the fundamental foundations correct and notwithstanding my complete addiction to iS Clinical (BIG news coming next month!), if I had to choose between paying a fortune for one cream or taking the supplements, the supplements would win hands down every time.
Hyaluronic Acid by LifeTime Vitamins £32.75 for 30 Capsules; Resveratrol with Pterostilbene by Life Extension £22 for 60 Capsules; IdealOmega 3 £22.99 for 60 Capsules
Lava Shells: For hundreds of years, South Pacific Islanders have harvested Tiger Striped Clams for food and then thrown the shells away. The discarded shells have now been turned into a powerful heated message tool, dubbed by Vogue as ‘the new hot stones’. Claiming to be ‘the world’s first naturally self-heating massage tool’ Lava Shell treatments can now be found in many leading spas and having spoken to several people who have had a Lava Shell treatment, most are saying it is the best treatment they had ever had, which is pretty impressive, but even more impressive is that there is a HomeCare Kit, so now we can all benefit.
Each HomeCare Kit contains one Lava Shell, four LavaGel packets, four Lava Activators, four applications of Botanical Massage Oil
and a set of instructions. It’s really simple to use, you just place a LavaGel sachet against the bottom of the shell, pour the contents of the Lava Activator into the shell, set the shell aside and wait five minutes for the Activator to fully absorb, place the cap on the shell and you are ready to go.
The Lava Shell is easy to hold and fits perfectly into the palm of your hand and there are numerous ways you can use it. On the day I was testing it, my neck was full of knots (probably because a manufacturer had just stressed me out – again!) and it miraculously eased all the tension and stiffness away within five minutes. It is said that you have ‘the warmth of the tropics in the palm of your hands’ and whilst I haven’t experienced a full Lava Shell body massage yet, a girl can only dream! Meanwhile, back to the new facial treatment trend (as above), choose a great face mask (such as the FABULOUS Exfoliating Soothing Mud Mask by Yes to Carrots), spread it over your face and then run the heated Lava Shell over the top of the mask. The natural mineral heat the shell emits will help the mud mask to penetrate deeper and we like the thought of that a lot!
Lava Shell HomeCare Kit £35; Exfoliating Soothing Mud Mask by Yes to Carrots £11.99
The End
And so we come to the end of another newsletter and together with Shabir and the entire VH team, I thank you, as ever, for your amazing support and loyalty. I hope that you all have a fabulous August and I will be back with the September newsletter where I will be writing about three big, new launches. Start getting excited!
With love
